I'm looking to get my first shotgun and I've read a lot of times you need to get one that 'fits' you. I'm wondering what shops you could recommend with a staff who are good at helping someone who doesn't know what they are doing buy a gun. I'm planning on a 12 or 20 gauge for upland and turkey hunting. I live in Killaloe, but willing to travel for some good service and advice. Thanks!

Valley guns in Petawawa, Perkins in Pembroke or Crappy tire in Pembroke all have a good selection.

Don't know your stores, but if you're looking at one shotgun for both turkey and upland game birds, then I'd definitely get a 12 gauge. You can get light loads for grouse and excellent turkey loads for turkey...best selection of ammo and more effective on turkeys than the 20 gauge. If you want the last word in dependability, a gun that always goes bang even if it's dirty, you can't beat the Remington 870 pump action. Depending on your budget you can get the basic Express or the nicely finished Wingmaster...both are good value and there's a reason they've outsold every other shotgun. If you want a reliable semi auto for it's lighter weight and you feel better about making quick follow-up shots with a semi, then you can't go wrong with the Turkish-made Weatherby. It's a very good semi auto shotgun for a very good price...the wood stocked versions will pleasantly surprise you with the quality of wood they use...check out the reviews online. I've had one for two seasons now and it's been flawless, albeit taking a wee bit longer to clean thoroughly than my 870. If you ask a knowledgeable person at the gun shop you choose, I'm sure he'll say positive things about the solid value and dependability of these two shotguns. I don't know your budget, and if it's a big budget then of course Benelli and Beretta make great semis, and there are some fine over and unders out there as well! I was suggesting a couple of choices that are solid guns and great bang-for-the-buck. Enjoy shopping! :)

I found a couple of shotguns at Gunco with Jason. Alternatively, you could try Stittsville Shooting Range. They have a boutique with some selection; I bought a Browning XS Skeet from them at a very decent price; ask for Carl or Lisa

Thanks for the suggestions. Should have my PAL by the end of the month, I'm sure I'll be talking about my new toy when I get it. Any other ideas are welome, thanks!

In addition to the places already mentioned, there's a LeBarons (Le Baron des Sports) in Ottawa that has a pretty good selection and is worth a look at. I see they are on Merivale Ave now.
