Good powder for 44 mag/44 special?

44 mag - Alliant 2400 is also my favorite for magnum loads. I understand it was designed for that caliber (44 Mag).
Like Boomer and others said above, Unique for fun plinking loads (puff loads).
Don't like Titegroup in that caliber, too fast and snappy.

Don't know for 44 spl, never reloaded any.

In my experience h110/296 is the best all round powder for both handguns and rifles, in my revolvers with 210-220 sierra’s I had the absolute best results both accuracy and velocity with vv n-105 but out of the rifle it only added about 20-30fps. For light loads I went with trail boss in magnum length cases with cast or plated. TB was so accurate I haven’t touched my 44 special cases since I discovered it.

You will find that you will enjoy shooting more with reduced loads, most of my practice loads are light loads with 231. I sold my S&W 29-5 to my son and now have two .44 specials, a Ruger GP100 and a Ruger Bisley Blackhawk. Your brass and revolver will take less pounding and last longer with lighter loads.

NOTE, Even Dirty Harry shot reduced loads in his S&W 29 and still got all the bad guys. And at the range, you don't need to destroy and knock the target over.

Your avatar is R.Lee Ermey. Having met, shook hands with, & talked with R.Lee, I miss him. Gunnery Sergeant Hartman could teach the new generation a thing or two, especially the Rainbow Mafia. Ooo-rahhh!

Take a look at Alliant’s RedDot. 44Special is spelled RedDot.

This!

I burned lots of it in S&W 624.
Accuracy mostly neck and neck 38 Spl.

I went with HS6, got some 8lb jugs from Henry when he was having a sale years ago. I found H6 had the widest range in loads for the 240gr Campro I wanted to load with.

I settled on a punchy 15gr HS6 load for the Campro, and a soft 6gr Bullseye load for a 240gr Bullet Barn lead bullet. I'm now thinking of working on a 125gr H110 load ..... lol

With HS6 a magnum primer often gets better results. Give it a try.

Elmer liked 2400. Just sayn....

ooooh, now I'm going to look up load data on 2400! :d

I did my initial load development using Federal magnum primers, and had some Winchester primers that were listed as for standard and magnum pistol loads, so I set up a batch to test. Thought I may as well run a test batch using regular Federal primers as well. I tested all 3 batches in my 629 and Ranch Hand. While there was differences in each batch, surprisingly the differences were very small. The batch using Federal Magnum primers did have slightly higher speed and the lowest avg deviation and ES.

and yes, I may have too much time on my hands recently because IPSC in BC has been down for a year, but this kind of testing pleaseth my inner geek ;)

Basically the same here. H110, XTP's & large Mag primers for hunting loads in the rifle. Trail Boss, Campro or Lead FN & large Std. primers for plinking with the revolver or rifle.

Reloading 44Mag, I use a Lee 'Auto-Drum' on a Lee 4-hole Progressive press. Using the same weight projectile, I find I don't have to touch/change the powder volume when I change from H110 to Trail Boss. (Always check to make sure the powder drop weight is within published data.) Makes for fast setups, usually the only adjustment is a minor change in the OAL.

.44 Special 200 grains Hollow base wadcutter 6 grains of unique is accurate as it can be. 6 grains of Unique with 255 grains SWC work well also.
4.5 grains of bullseye also work fine.
Those are reduced - target load. The 44 Special turn inside the 44 mag when we talk reduced load and accuracy.

The .44 mag is more popular, but shooter who master that caliber with full power load are far in between. Many seek lower power load and there, the .44 special make a shadow over the magnum. It’s a shame shooter pass by the .44 Special, it’s fun to boot and very accurate.
