Anybody know of some good quality 22lr ammo for target shooting? Not much selection around these parts so I'm going to order some in. Don't want to waste all the money on shipping garbage to me so figured I'd ask what you guys would suggest.

Also, any suggestions on where I can order this stuff from? Figured I'd order a couple of boxes of possibly 3 different brands and see which one shoots best before ordering a couple of bricks.

Any help you can offer would be great.

Oh by the way, the rifle is a Mark II TR.

thanks

How far out are you planning to go? Ammo that performs well at 50 yards, won't at 100 yards or further if it has a lot of shot-to-shot velocity deviation.

There are some links here to our match results that show what people are using as well as pictures of the winning targets at 100, 200 and 300 yards:

Eley Match and Lapua Center-X (formerly Master/Master M) have consistently performed well in every rifle I's seen use them. Lower priced stuff has, but it takes more lot screening to find good ones and even then, you do still get a higher number of vertical flyers. ANY rifle will benefit from lower velocity deviation at those distances.

I order SK Standard Plus by the case from Hirsch precision in Nova Scotia and have it shipped to BC. Excellent ammo.

That is what I do,SK Standard Plus works great in several guns that I have tried it in.My Cooper regularly puts five of them into 1/4" to 3/8" groups at 50 yards, and just under an inch at 100 yards.

Eley sport (green label black box) is around 5 a box and is pretty accurate, not quite as accurate as their tenex which is almost 2.5 times the price. PM me if you want to order by the case, shipping is not a killer

Thanks for the info folks. So does anyone have a phone number for the target shooting website people? I always find it better to speak with someone rather than simply doing an "online shopping cart".

Keep the info coming!!

FYI - I just ordered some SK Standard Plus, SK Rifle Match, and Lapua Center X from Heirsh. Sounded like a nice guy over the phone, will let you folks know how the ammo turns out when I finally get out to test it.

I was very suprised the shipping was just over $20.

Jerry, if you have any ammo of various types you don't intend to use are you interested in selling it? I could always use more for testing until I find the "right one".

Try CCI Standard Velocity and Remington Subsonic. The Eley, Lapua, and SK stuff will be better, but costs more too.

My 10/22 Dlask loves the Winchester bulk packs and the Winchester SuperX 40gr high velocity stuff for long shooting. Going to pick up so Eley today to try out this weekend.

Here is how a bunch of ammo tested in my Savage BTVS. Best to worst. Some of the Lapua names have changed as an earlier poster says. They no longer make the M and L (medium and large size bullets). Master I believe is now Center-X, and the Midas is now Midas+. The club and super club have been replaced (renamed) to the SK line. In general I found the more it cost, the better it shot -- at least in the subsonic target ammo. And in the high velocity stuff, the faster it got, the worse it was. Velocitor and Stinger were the exceptions.

The Eley Match EPS should have shot better, but I was magazine feeding, and I think my chamber was shaving the sides of at least some of the bullets due to the EPS bullet shape. Round nose Eley Tenex and CCI green tag also shot very well for me.

Best sources of target ammo I found are Hirsch Precision and Target Shooter Supplies.

I received the ammo the other day and got out for a couple of hours of shooting.

I tried the SK Rifle Match and the Center X most. I was very surprised the Center X didn't seem to shoot well at all, most cheap ammo beat it at the 50yard mark.
Rifle Match shot much better with most 5 shot groups having all rounds touching.

I did fire one group of SK Standard Plus and was amazed at the groups size, it is one hole and the smallest group I've ever shot at 50yards. This stuff put them on target the same as all other ammo could do at 25yards. Perhaps it was a lucky group so I'm interested to get back out when the weather clears.

I didn't try much past 50yards but did shoot 2 groups with the Center X which measured right around 1MOA.

If you want to determine differences between ammo, you need to shoot a lot of groups. When I did my testing, I based it on shooting 24 two shot groups minimum. From there I calculated averages and standard deviation.

It is rather meaningless to shoot a few groups and pick out small ones. For example look at this target. If I just showed you the bottom right group you would probably pay me good $$'s for that ammo. The reality is it is cheap Dynapoint from Walmart, at $18 per 500, and I got lucky. The stuff basically shoots good, but does have flyers that make consecutive good groups impossible. The good ammo just has less flyers. Dynapoints realistically in my gun are 3/4" groups when averaged, and obviously some a lot better, and many a lot worse.

Also do you realize that Lapua makes SK, and it is just the same stuff off the same machines (except for the real high end Lapua), and probably did not test well enough to get the Lapua name on the box.
