Any suggestions for a good scope for a 17HMR rifle (Marlin XT-17V) for target shooting only, I prefer one with exposed turrets.

I have a Simmons 4x32 cost me under $60.00 set it up once at 50 yards and your only worry would be elevation / holdover at longer distances
cheap lite and works like it should btw have the same cheapbutt scope on my 204 ruger

Vortex or Athlon make the leading PRS style (exposed turret, FFP, MIL/MOA reticles) budget target scopes in the $500 range, I would get 16x minimum... also if you are just target shooting I would ditch the 17hmr and buy a .22LR or .223...

I have 2 Bushnell Elite Tactical 10X scopes, one is on a Savage 93R17 and the other is on a Savage MKII FV-SR.They have the exposed target turrets and Mil-Dot reticles but I believe they've been dicontinued.I do see them posted on the EE occasionally ( around $250 ).

The original post is too vague in my opinion to generate a useful answer. We need things like budget, what you are shooting, and any spec requirements you may have.

Vote for Athlon, they are not well known in Canada but grabbing market share in the US for competition.

I have an Athlon on my Savage .223 bolt action, it completely outclasses other scopes at it's price point, ask Jerry at Mystic.

Also have a Cabelas caliber specific .17 HMR scope on my Savage RF bolt action, it's a no brainer with the reticle.

Agreed,

What sort of reticle do you want? dot, crosshairs, some sort of Christmas tree type?

Does weight matter?

What size tube do you want: 1", 30mm, 34mm?

What magnification range do you want or do you want a fixed power model?

For true target shooting you might want a fixed power 24x, or 36x or 50x? None of those will work for you the instant you leave the range and take it hunting or varminting should the opportunity arise.

Hoe much do you want to spend? Without knowing your budget you are going to get all kinds of recommendations, from cheap Chinese knock offs to things like March and Schmidt and Bender.

That said, without knowing your budget you should perhaps look at Hawke's rimfire scopes. They make a wide variety of variable power scopes for air rifle and rimfire and are relatively reasonably priced ($500 and up new, and they come up used in the EE now and then).

Not to be a Debbie Downer but most .17 HMR's are not what I would call high precision instruments, more like minute of gopher. Given the cost of HMR ammo, it's a curious choice for a target only rifle. For the same or less $ than standard HMR ammo you can buy true match grade ammo for .22 LR from Eley, RWS and Lapua. No one makes match grade ammo for the .17 HMR so if your plan is to shoot for smallest groups it's going to be a very frustrating experience.

My Anschutz 1517 is a bit better than minute of gopher at 100 yards. Definitely ammo dependent.
4 shot groups as the Annie magazine is that size.
Vortex Diamondback Tactical 6-24 is what I have on it now but have Athlon on other rifles so either is fine.

^^^ everything PG said.

also, what distance are you shooting? and what kind of tgts, regular paper or shoot n'see or steel?

I shoot to 200y with my cz455 with a leupold varix iii 6.5-20 and I can see hits on paper. Other older guys at my club with really bad eyes cant see 22 cal hits with that or my s3 6.5-24. They needed to go up to the s3 8-32.

17hmr gonna be real hard to spot hits at distance without very good glass.

Good points guys, I use my .22 Anschutz as well with subsonic Eley ammo, and the .17HMR on rodents for more human kills.

The .17 is about hydrostatic shock and will never be as accurate as a sub sonic rimfire at 100 yards.

You might want to take a look at Element Optics. You can get them from Airgun Source in Canada. Lots of gushing reviews on YouTube.

I have had 2 of them and both are great for the money.

One was the $1900 Nexus model and the second was the $600 Helix model which I still have on a PCP air rifle.

The Helix scope is basically the same price as a Vortex Diamondback tactical since it includes a bikini cover and flip ups.

Its a better scope than a Vortex DT all day long. Turret clicks are solid, has a zero stop that you can set to go past zero if you want,,, I do... and the glass is considerably better than a Vortex DT. Oh ya... no tools needed to reset the turrets.

If you are curious, you can buy it from AGS and if you don't like it, you can return it, as long as you don't mount it on a gun.

I just bought a CZ 455 and am putting a Bushnell Prime 3-12x40 Multi-X SFP on it. It comes with a turret for a 17 HMR 17 grain. The scope hasn't showed up yet but I'll let you know how it is after i have tried it out.

Hi there

I responded to your ad on May 18th,saying I had 2 Bushnell Tactical Elite's with fixed 10X ( discontinued I believe ).My suggestion was based on your preference for exposed turrets and strictly for target shooting.I also have 2 Bushnell Tactical Elites in 5-15X40 with Mil Dot reticles that may suit your purpose as well. While I'm not trying to make a sale ( I have 5 Elite Tacticals that are excellent target scopes ),there is an Elite Tactical 5-15X40 currently listed in the EE.There have been a number of both Elite model scopes listed on the since they were discontinued.I'm tempted each time I see one but stop myself as I would "obligated" to buy another target rifle.

Just another possible option for you if you haven't already made a selection.

All the best in your search.
