I bought a Ruger 77/17 target (matte stainless and pepper laminate) off my buddy a while ago when his kid was born; it shoots well and I did not want to see one of you guys getting it :p. It has a Tasco Mag IV on it; there is nothing wrong with it, but I have been getting used to the Bushnell Elites and Leupolds I have and would like tog et something a bit better.

I would like to get soemthing for no more than $400 (less is better); waht would you recommend?

The Burris multiplex apparently is set up to coincide with the bullet drop of the .17(coincidental), so it would be a decent choice in your price range.

Trophy xlt 4-12x40 AO, Legend 4-12 or 5-15 (what I have on one of mine), Elite 3200 in 4-12 or 5-15, VXII 4-12 AO.

Depends on your end use of the rifle. If used as a small game rifle, I'd stick to the lower end of magnification ie 4-12 or lower if you can find one with rimfire range parallax or AO. For target work, the higher magnification scopes might suit your needs a little better. I have a Legend 5-15x40 AO on my hunting .17 and find that for the most part, it stays on 5 power and I sometimes find myself wishing I could adjust it even lower.

YMMV.

Try the Burris Timberline (compact) 4.5-14x32 AO scope at $297. This is one of our best selling scopes for high performance airguns, rimfires and compact varmint rifles as it gives good variable magnification in a compact size. Also because it has adjustable parallax it is coneinient to use at very close range and longer shots as well. Phil.

Are the Timberlines as good a quality as the Short Mag they are replacing? I ask since I have a 2-7x28mm Short Mag on my muzzleloader and it is a great scope, but I am a bit dubious when a replacement product comes out and the price drops drastically (Short Mag sold for ~ $400 new ~ 5 years ago).

I put an elite 3200 short action compact 3-10 on my .17 and it seems like a good fit. AO would be nice but I usually shoot it at 100 so its no big deal.
