Hi,

I am thinking of putting a scope on my norinco m14s and wondered what is a good choice for a decent quality optic like Leupold. I just want something that can handle the recoil and pounding that the M14s makes and still have good quality glass.

Hi mrsmitty,

I'm also looking for a scope for the m14. It's going to be used for BCRA rifle matches.

I'm considering the Burris 3-12x50 XTR and the Leupold Mark 4 3.5-10x40mm LR/T M2.

I'm waiting for a reply in another thread in Optics asking peoples input, but havn't received comment on either yet.

I'll share what i've learned and hopefully can be of some use in your search for a scope.

The Leupold does 3.5-10 with a 40mm objective, but the glass is supposed to be fantastic.

Burris gives you a bit more reach at 3-12 and a larger objective of 50mm.

The build quality on the Burris seems quite good from reviews, the Luepold is known to be excellent.

Both have lifetime warranties, but Burris doesn't have a Canadian service center that I know of.

Both have illuminated reticles, but vary on the type of retricle used.

The retricle on the Burris looks really interesting. It has regular Mildot for top, left and right quadrants for mildot measuring and range estimation. On the bottom quadrant, it was designed for the center crosshair to be sighted in (zero’d) at 100 meters, then each additional ballistic line below center represents 100 meters in additional target distance. It works for both .308 as well as .223 (but that doesn't matter for us with m14)

The Leupold uses a TMR crosshair and has similar features to the Burris. It also provides the same target distance ranging capability, but looking at the diagrams for the TMR, it is personally harder to read then that of the Burris to make the same holdover on the ranging, but it will work fine with practice.

Both are rear focal plane reticles.

Both are 30mm tubes.

The Burris XTR runs around $800us, the Leupold runs about $1400us

Hope that helps some.

And the classic "entry" 3-9x40? Is it even an option?

I'll spring for more if it's warranted...advise? :)

I am so new to scoping riflees in general, and esp. to 7.62mm....:D

There was a springfield scope in the exchange forum, I have one on mine and works well.

6x40 Government Model SPRINGFIELD SCOPE RIFLE 6X40MM GOVERNMENT, RANGE FINDING RETICLE WITH BULLET DROP COMP FOR .308 WIN 168 GR AMMO, 1" TUBE, INTERNAL BUBBLE LEVEL

throughout the past year and a half of running m14 clinics, I have talked to many guys who have scoped thier rifles.
the following is an incomplete list of scope brands that many have chosen and had good success with

-leoupold obviously
-bushnell's elite series.... 3200 and up
- the Super Sniper 10x (formerly tasco japan and a big favorite but is "unobtainium" )
IOR
- Falcon menace
- eotech

and a few others.
i have a offshore scope with a brand name called "VisionTac" .... an ebay purchase for a .22. it's a 6-18 x52 with infinite parralax adjust. I put it on an m14 with a crappy mount 3 years ago in an effort to test the m14's ability to blow up scopes...... that scope still holds zero to this day and it's proably the best optic i've ever bought as far as value for the $$ spent goes :D

I am holding off replacing it untill the IOR , valdada optics are readily availlable in canada.

I think you will find that you will have a better selection of scopes that hold up and hold their zero than scope mounts.

+ 1 for the Bushy Elite 3200 10x 40mm Mildot selling for around $ 200ish. Great glass for the money. The reason I'm pushing this scope is that you will likely buy ANOTHER M14 for kicks and giggles  and the Elite 3200 10x Mildot won't break the bank, or your wallet.

I had a Leapers rubberized 3-9x40 mil-dot ( $100 @ Marstar ) on my M14 for two years and it shot great and held zero perfectly fine. I'm no expert, but I think rumors of the M14 blowing up scopes may be a little exagerrated...

That scope cannot be adjusted for parallex (if I'm not mistaken) which is sh*t.
