I am looking for something decent and affordable. It would be my first holster so I'm looking for something simple rather than something fancy. Obviously we can't CCW so it's mainly for on the range or practice or fun. What do you like to use or reccommend?

hm...most ranges don't allow shoulders holsters. You can easily sweep yourself and others. Look at a nice belt holster or leg rig. I recommend Bladetech or Tac-pro.

Like MUSKY HUNTER says a lot of ranges discourage the use of shoulder holsters and there are few if any of the holstered shooting sports that allow them. That being said I am sure a lot of us have them and found them to be awkward , uncomfortable , and hard to reholster easily, they are a special use piece of gear that doesn't adapt well to range use. A good belt rig ( I like leather holsters) is a joy to use on a range, your gun is clear and empty on your hip when not in use and when it is your turn to shoot it is right at your hand to load and shoot. A hip holster usually doesn't take two hands to reholster like some shoulder holsters do.

I have to re-iterate that has already been said, shoulder holster make really unhappy range mates as you just swept your barrel across them all.

Having said that, take a look at www.davesarmysurplus.com (when they get there site back up), they have a good selection of holsters including tactical tailor, safari land and fobus. I have a personal appeal towards a Balde Tech or other molded plastic holster, but they are expensive.

I should note that I do not have a lot of experience with holsters, just what other people have.

Ok. If the shoulder holsters are that crummy, I might go for a hip holster (it's just that it makes me feel like I'm in the Wild West or something!)

In that case, what is out there that is sturdy and not fancy? I just want something to hold my gun while I hold another gun. I mean my drink. Uh... Hmmm. I see your posts so I'll take a look at this "Blade Tech" or "Tac-Pro."

Good cheap option is the Uncle Mikes Super Belt Slide Holsters... less than $30, and it holds it nice an secure.

Shoulder holsters are cool for dinking around the house, but that's about it.

I picked up a modular black nylon shoulder holster from Dave's Army surplus. I think the manufacturer is KJN.

It's pretty good. Mag pouch and holster are interchangable and the holster can unclip from the harness and doubles as a belt holster. There are straps under the mag pouch and holster to loop through your belt.

I think I picked it up for $55.

I do not like or use many shoulder holsters. I flat out do not like them. Why? When you drive a car the handgun tends to move backward out of reach. With this said, If I were "Unregistered" I would find and buy a US military tanker model to try. Regards, Richard :D

a saddlery/leather store may be able to help you out there- they can fashion bigger loops and belts and restitch it just like the original- if they can do collars for draft animals, etc

I dug this one out of the depths...

So...Any do CGN dealers stock these Tanker style or Galco Shoulder rigs? My Colt .45 needs one.

I have one of these for my NP-29. I'm going to use it to legally carry my NP-29 in the winter if I have to tramp through the woods after the bears go to sleep.

I like the M7 as it mounts vertically on the left front side of your chest so you don't sweep anyone with it when you draw from it

Plus they look cool. :D

I have a Uncle Mike Size 5 vertical shoulder holster for my CZ85. $30.00 and it has an extra mag pocket too. Like other members have said, it's not good at a range. It is good for CCW, but I will say that it's not the most comfortable holster made.

Where did you pick that up from Vern? Looks good.

I ordered it from Cabelas. It's a reproduction by a company called Adirondack. Mine is more of a reddish-brown than the picture I got off the web.

It's a good quality holster.

DeSantis Holsters has a bunch of shoulder holsters but they are very expensive. That said, I just ordered a nice leather hip holster for my XD from them.

The Galco shoulder holster is very comfy for 1911. I don't have the Miami rig, just the standard one. I shoot out at Sherwood Park during the week, and I've yet to run into another shooter at the pistol range while I'm there, so this holster will be accompanying me there to practice drawing/holstering unloaded, and drawing+firing loaded.

I wouldn't wear it at a crowded range, or really anywhere that another person could be within sight.

Plus 1 on what geologist said. I carry my 1911 when fishing and the rig works great for winter carry or when I am wearing chest waders. Bears are a major problem up here...they are anything but extinct!

For range use though I like leather and for playing the games Blade Tech by far all on the belt.

Take Care

Bob
