good source for deer calling sounds??

I'm thinking of trying calling to a greater extent this year, but I have to know exactly what I'm shooting for (pardon the pun). I've found all kinds of demo's on youtube and such, but what sounds am I looking to imitate without scaring the deer??

One other thing, on the little deer calls with the wooden piece and plastic tube, I've noticed it easier to imitate certain sounds by having a hoot on the plastic tube opposite the reed. Would the sound carry far enough?? Any thoughts appreciated.
