Good Starting Firearms

About .22 Rifles: Are their any brands to stay away from? The two places around my house sell a few of the brands you mentioned, but have some other ones:
-Cooey's,Steven's,Remington,Henry, and Winchester:

One thing about .22's. Some ammo works better in some rifles than in others. When you finally decide on a rifle, buy a 50 pack of a few different brands and try them in your rifle.

Pick a brand name stainless .22 to start with. Stainless is very forgiving if you get sloppy about proper maintenence. Also buy something that has a good resale value, as a handgun is a very personal item. What suits me, might not be the handgun for you. As for a .22, I like both the Ruger Mk II bull barrel and the Ruger 10/22, both have tons of aftermarket accessories available.

What brands are "Brand-Name"? Any more examples besides ruger rifles? They are not showing up in my local area unless I am blind.

Lots

As for 22's I have a very old Savage 4C (bolt), Ruger K10/22 (semi), Anschutz match 54 (bolt) and Marlin 70PSS Papoose (semi). A savage would be a good start only because you should be able to find one for a very reasonable price. Most I have seen, used or heard about shoot well.

Brand names, Remington, Winchester, Ruger, Tikka, Sako, Browning (not my favorite), Weatherby, Savage, Benelli, Marlin, CZ, Cooper, Kimber, Thompson Center, Mossberg and those are just the mainstream brands. You have much internet searching and drooling ahead of you. Just off the top, Cooper, Kimber, Sako and Benelli may be out of the $$$ reach since you may not find much under the $1200 price tag and that would be used.

Well my local gun store (www.thecuncentre.ca) has quite a few .22 rifles, including a savage. What do you guys think of Cooey's? Several on the site for less than a hundred bucks, which has me worried. My friend tells me you get what you pay for so I'm a little nervous about something that is so much cheaper. Your thoughts?
