Good value AR barrels

Looking for recommendations on good value AR barrels. This rifle is likely to be built in the US, so availability isn't a huge issue, but the barrel must be 16" or better.

I would prefer a barrel with a F-height FSB, instead of a lo-pro block.

It's the CHF process...the PSA at $150 won't have that. Would you notice the difference? Probably not...but I wouldn't recommend any barrel from PSA except for the FN-made ones (Premium and CHF from my understanding).
 
if you are building this rifle in the USA, might be better off asking the question on AR15.com instead, Canadian's doesn't even get a fraction of barrel selection that is available in the States.

I don't know that a Rainier Arms qualifies as "good value" at that price point. I define good value as a high performance:price ratio. I don't mind spending $300 on a barrel but what does it give me that other $300 barrels don't? A nitrided PSA barrel at $150 seems to offer very good value for the money. At $250, less so, unless it is comparable to a $300-400 barrel.

Can someone explain why CHF is so desirable? I am not a high volume shooter. Mil-spec doesn't require CHF, so even the high end Colt rifles don't use CHF barrels. Anschutz and Walther barrels are all button rifled. There isn't a competitive benchrest shooter in the world who uses a CHF barrel, so it can't be accurate. Listening to the video below - and the two men presenting it are in a position to know - it seems that it is more an economy of scale thing for the producer.

If by "high end Colt rifles" you are referring to the ARs that Colt Canada makes for our soldiers and special forces around the world, they are in fact CHF iirc.
 
From an older post from CMMG I found online..."The cold hammer forge process offers distinct advantages. The process reduces the outside diameter of the barrel without removing material. This increases the density of the steel, making it stronger and more rigid. The crystalline structure of the steel is realigned to the desired rifle twist. Finally pulling a button broach through the barrel creates tiny pot and tear marks through the bore; whereas the hammer forging process leaves a super smooth surface throughout the bore, offering less resistance on the projectile."

I read that it is faster to produce but the machinery is crazy expensive. I'm a mall ninja so I accept it as better (for me) :)
 
Normally I would say that Stag is great bang for your buck but Arms East doesn't appear to have any in stock. Still, might be worth a call...

CHF barrels can be fantastic but I wouldn't normally consider them "good value" due to price.

CanAmmo have some Norc 14.5" barrels for $120. Now that is great value. I think they may even be CHF.
 
Thanks for all of your advice. A friend is giving me a whole whack of 9mm ammo, so I am going with a 9mm AR. Pay for the tax stamp and go with an 11" barrel from Ballistic Advantage.
