Thanks for the replies, everyone. The ruger precision looks like an awesome setup, but unless I find a killer deal on one, I'll probably go for the mk2 savage. It seems to be the best bang for your buck. I'm gonna keep an eye out for a brno, as well. My dad (who passed on many years ago) bought one in the late 70s, I believe. He was very happy with it

Marlin XT22 are good, but because you showed interest in PRC you might want to look into starter guns.
But I know plenty that run MKII in outlaw rimfire. The TR has a nice Boyd's wood stock. Some members have shot under 1/2" with them. B22 I'm sure is good but have less aftermarket support than the MKII.
I run a old Mossberg 144 for my off hand rimfire shoots, got a Target 1022, Russian Mosin Trainer and couple Anschutz 64s, one scoped and one aperture.
CZ's are good it you can find one under $500.
The Marlin XT22 and the XT17 show up at our 100 Metre shoots and account very well for themselves.
The Savage's a good starter rifles but rarely meet the expectations of the shooters once they go head to head with others.
My personal recommendation would be CCI SV and practice.
Most often once an upgrade is in the works you should get most of your money out of it.
With the club guns, fail to extract is the biggest issue followed by magazines allowing bullet to stovepipe.
This is sometimes solved by adjusting the lips.
With scoped rifles the first upgrade may be either or . . . the rifle and/or the scope.
Personally . . . should have bought the Anschutz first!

Yup, I should went with Anschutz first.
You can find some good deals on Anschutz's. My 1403 was only 500$ and my 64 Silhouette was 600$
I bought my Savage MKII TR off the EE for $400 used in excellent condition.
Good looking rifle with a nice wood stock and shoots very accurate with CCI SVs. IMO the mags are flimsy but work and easy to find/replace.
I've been planning on upgrading the scope but the combo has been good to me so far.....
any pictures of the target from 50 meters?
with different ammo?

2 members made the 1/2" club with their MK2 TR. I would say it's safe to say it avgs above 1/2" to 3/4".
Everyone seems to miss out on the Scorpios; $200.00, have owned one; two of my friends own them, very accurate, well made excellent hammer forged barrels and extra 10 round mags are like $20.
The Thumb-hole stock is above par on most .22s. Quality of bluing is as good as, or better than, pretty much anything built in NA.

Since the op already stated that the 457 is outside budgetary constraints; why even suggest it. I love my CZs and Brnos, they are my current go-to guns.
Savage Mk IIs are a decent gun also; that would likely be my second choice after the Scorpio; not a lot of options for customization, however my cousin added a good quality micrometer aperture sight to his and is shooting very competitively. My colleague can't get over how easy 1 hole groups are with the stock sights; when I had mine I also had peep sights on it and was always scoring very high. It shot as well as my CZs and better with some brands of ammo. Standard dovetail mounts for scopes.
Workmanship wise, these exceed the fit and finish of the Mk II. The magazines are slicker, they feed flawlessly, and when you are done with it, you will be able to sell it for about what you paid for it. I bought the X 13", super handy on the quad or in the suv, but takes special care at the range to keep muzzle safe and it doesn't fit the racks
They have great mags, so far, less trouble than my savage
Fitted a front and rear bag-rider to try and tame it some on the bench, supplied rail is solid with Burris rings for cant
