goose banding

What is a reward band and what sort of information do the bands give you?

Looks like this, they all have the plain silver one, but the green one is the reward band.

Once you report a band number the info is given to you about the bird. Approximate age, if it was too young to fly when banded, adult etc, ###,species, banders name, banding location. It gives biologists an idea of survival rates, harvest rates, migration patterns, average ages etc. Information compiled over time helps sets season dates, lengths, harvest rates etc. Because of that info is why Ontario has the early nuisance season and why over time that season's bag limits and possession limits have been adjusted to be so liberal as they are. Band reporting is your friend.

So back to my question that you must have missed swinginberrys, do they still place reward bands on birds or is that a thing of the past????

Not sure if true or not but I heard there was no banding going on in SW Ont. this summer due to issues between James Vano's and the CWS.......I'm sure that is just rumor but????????

Ya been hunting too for 5 years, about 50 birds a year myself, no bands yet. Just got to wait for another amazing year.

Wow 50 birds a year for 5 years and no bands??? You are in a very band rich area keep at it and you will get into them! Are your 50 birds geese or ducks or a mix of both??? If you are talking ducks than ya they are few and far between but banded geese are not rare at all in your area.

The area of NE Ontario I used to hunt used to have a couple different guys banding ducks at a couple local DU projects. Duck bands were very common obviously. Geese however were a migrant hunting option only. Years back the only geese we saw were James Bay migrants riding the winds south. Stopovers were rare. Then withbthe explosion of Canadas around the great lakes more and more geese started appearing early on in Sept. This was the beginning of the moult migrant migration. Juvenile non-breeding Canadas that spend their summer in the James Bay lowlands duting their moult. We figured out the number of birds taken vs bands recovered was about 50:1. For every 50 moult migrants we averaged 1 band. Now I am out in SK and a rough guess estimate on the flyway I am on would be about 250:1 ration on Snows and 5,000:1 on Canadas and ducks. There is no shortage of birds but not many appear to be banded.

I'm talking SW Ont. Frank, totally different scenario and that is where Lead Loader is located, not Eastern Ont. and not New Liskeard area............... tons of local "resident" geese are banded every season, there are duck banding projects as well but no where near the numbers of geese irons applied. I'm interested in hearing from swinginberrys on the reward band question.

My apologies, I missed that.
As far as I know they still reward band on occasion. I don't believe it is a common practice but don't quote me on that. I'll try and get an actual answer straight from the horses mouth. As soon as I find out I'll be sure to let you know.

Yes I knew where you were referring to. I was referring to the comment about Lead Loaders bird to band ratio just for interests sake. Maybe next time you should specify who is allowed to answer to or quote your posts if it is such an inconvenience for you.
