OK Gents how many of you hunt geese and call with a short reed.
If you do, which call do you use and why?

I am currently still learning on a custom cocobolo call and a Canada HAmmer II but I am still having some troubles getting a good double cluck.

Where did you guys learn to call, friends, dad or videos?
I was trying to find a copy of Shawn Stahl's Honker Talk on CGN but no luck. I am now contemplating buying the Knight & HAle Package with the Magnum Clucker, goose tube and instructional video. Anybody have any experience with these calls/video?

Thanks for any advice, or if you have a good video you want to sell drop me a line.

Dude, I am a ####ty caller. I don't have any experienced hunting friends 'round here. I will get a video over the summer, but, last year I was just doing whatever the birds are doing. they're silent-me too. they're howlin-me too... you know what I mean

How do you like that Canada Hammer II? I just bought one from SIR yesterday and it will be on its way here tomorrow.

Right now I am using a poly Zink Power Maximus, but thought that I'd try the CH II as I am looking for a lower volume goosey call for the in-close calling.

Short reeds (SR) work off back pressure, which is most often created by holding the barrel (far end) of the call with your thumb and forefinger and using your other three fingers to create the back pressure by almost closing them (like a fist) off the end of the call. As the pressure builds up, it places the reed in a position to "break" upwards, thus creating the honk sound.

You can regulate your air flow by lifting the middle of your tongue until it is near the roof of your mouth, but do not let the tip of your tongue go past your teeth. Blow out from your gut, and keep the air flowing into the call - do not let the air hang around in your mouth and inflate your cheeks.

I ordered Shawn Stahl's "Honker Talk" (DVD) and Zink's calling video (VHS) "Talk the Talk - The Ancient Art of Paralyzing" from Tim Trader's Outdoors. They ship fast and free (even to Canada). They are both good videos.

I bought two Knight & Hale videos (one for ducks and one for geese), but do not use them much. Having said that, the geese are back here and I will probably watch that video again anyway just in case there is something there that can help me since I can now sit on my deck and practice calling again. :D
 
Best thing to do is listen and watch live birds. Videos and tapes are a big help as well, as is an experienced caller. Short reeds are by far, the best type of call, but harder to learn to use.

I really like it. I can get really good long honks, clucks moans and gabbles from it. It is quite easy to use and doesn't require as much air as others I have tried. The thing I still can't figure out is the double cluck. The ability to sound like two different geese at once elludes me.

I did go and purchase the Knight & Hale - Double Clucking video and call set. It is crap in my opinion. The tube call is useless and the magnum clucker is marginal. The video was what I was really interested in, and it was a big disappointment. They got to the part part in the tape when they were going to cover how to create the Double Cluck, and I athought oh boy here we go. Then they pull out a different call (funny enough called the Double Clucker) and show you how to create the sounds on it. You would think this would be useful but the Double Clucker call is a double ended call works on the inhale and exhale. Completely different principal then the call that came with the video.

Crap I tell ya.

Waterfowler, what kind of call do you blow? I would like to talk to someone who has a higher end call and see whether they are worth the money.

I haven't got a short reed goose call yet but when I do jump to short reeds (have a K&H flute) I will probably start off with a Pit Boss, then get a Foiles like my other buddys have
 
I bought a K&H Double Cluck call. I serously suck at calling since I'm still learning and never really had anyone show me how to do it....
But the Double CLuck is easy to use and makes a load of noise and I've had success so far.

My strategy is like Daniel's, make noise if they're into and be quiet if they're not. Sure, maybe I scared a few off my not making all the right sounds at the right time, but I still manage to bag quite a few. I used to hunt without calls or decoys, so any improvement is a step up for me:D
 
I do a bit of goose hunting and am quite successful on average

I dont call a whole lot

right deke setups and being where they want to be are much more important IMO, and of course staying hidden from their eyes.

The Canada Hammer II is actually a pretty damned good call for the money! It blows very easy and can produce higher and lower calls quite easily (mine arrived yesterday).

I don't hunt geese much, but may start hunting them more as I really like the calling aspect of it and, after all, they are waterfowl!

Funny thing (?) for me is, I have had a Zink call (Power Maximus) since the fall and after using my CHII last night the Zink seems easier to call with. I think the CHII is more forgiving and has more easily allowed me to get in the groove, so when I picked up the Zink call immediately after I was already in the zone. When I had just gone straight to the Zink call, the first few calls were a bit out of whack (I still need to get to the level where I can instantly be "on" with the Zink call).

But I don't use it right.

I did a quick read of their website and it appears that they make a short reed.

In that case, I would suggest the two videos that I mentioned in an earlier post (Stahl and Zink videos). There are other videos out there, but I found these to be the most recommended (esp. on the Refuge) and they cover everything from basic sounds to stringing together a contest calling sequence ..... they even include some discussion on tuning and caring for your call.

heheheh ... I hear some geese flying by right now so I am going outside to practice. :)
 
:) ... they were going to put down at the end of our field and I picked 'em up and brought them back around. ;D ;D They swung over the house and headed back in the original direction that they came from.

The videos are good, but I am looking forward to a summer of sitting on the deck (door is in our room) and practicing on some real geese.
