Hey all. Last season was my first for birds. We had mixed success at a number of spots. We have access to a family property in Midhurst Ontario. We have an open corn field to use. Question 1: Should we build our blind on the edge of the field or dead centre? Not likely to do layout blinds.

Question 2: Do you recommend leaving decoys out permantly or place them only during hunts?

Thank you

Only during hunts. I'm not a fan of permanent blinds, I'm an on the move follow the birds kinda guy. That being said I wouldn't be able to give any kind of advice with understanding the whole layout of the area and the birds habits. Every area is unique

100 acres, all corn. Nothing of significant structure on the edges of the field, all open. We've seen geese land here and there while deer hunting. There seems to be thousands on the field across the road all times of day. Aside from being on the other side of the road there is no difference in the properties.

Place your decoys out on hunt day. If you must hunt from a permanent blind try to make it disappear into its background. The middle of the field means only one kind of permanent blind....a pit!! One or two hunts from a permanent standing blind in the middle of the field and the birds will avoid it like the plague.

Watch the birds on the property with binos the day before, you can use a layout blind before sunrise mixed with corn stocks from the field and you would be good to go with .do not put decoys out before your hunt.i learned this from a fellow hunter up in newliskard who just slays them.he follows the birds.

I love it when folks make permanent blinds in the middle of a field and end up burning a field out. Makes it easier for me to target them in other fields!;)
