Goose guns

Put 5-10 pellets that pentrate into the center core of the bird and its dead. Doesnt matter what gauge it is or what length the shell is.

Guess I should give back all of those birds that I got with my 20 gauge using an ounce of 2 steel, at common sense shooting distances, huh?.....I too miss the days of lead,, a nice 12 gauge 2 3/4 inch load of number 2 or bb worked wonders back then....

It is hard to judge sometimes in the heat of the moment and yes I could get some with a 410 but it doesn't mean a 410 or 20ga is an ideal goose hunting shotgun just because you killed some birds with it
Cheers

If you miss the days of 12 gauge lead 2’s or BB’s, why would ever use a 20 with an ounce of 2’s ?

I still use a vintage black powder 12 gauge in 2 3/4" gun quite often , and also a 20 gauge gun - both throw one oz of shot but the BP loads are bismuth.
My hunting buddy shoots an 2 3/4" 1100 Remington with a Polychoke on it and iis absolutely devastating over decoys with it.

The bismuth is as good as lead IMO but expensive and now hard to find the new improved version. In fact have not seen any in canada yet and it must be two years now since reintroduced

12's were my preference then , but my 20 with an ounce of steel is my real world now. Generally can't get larger shot in the 20, so need to run the 2's. The 20 gauge load works just fine to about 40-45 yds with mod. choke setup, plenty of pattern, clean kills.

You must have trouble with lead years ago. 45 yards with a ounce of 2’s out of a twenty is a good shot.

this past fall my grandson and I were on a tight budget, we ran out of 10 gauge ammo, and we used up all our 12 ga 3 inch ammo
so I had 10 boxes of 2 3/4 inch 12 gauge #2 shot
so we went with those
we just let the geese come right into our decoy spread real close 20 to 30 yards
we actually got way more geese with those 12 ga 2 3/4 in # 2 shots then with anything else we used,
(between snow geese and honkers we got over 200 geese, and we used every ounce of meat available on them, and have none left now)
I dunno why you would think or where you got that idea from that , he is under gunned with a 12 gauge 2 3/4 inch shell
my daughter shoots a 20 gauge 3 inch # 2 shot and she kills geese consistently out to 40 yards
I realise with the 10 gauge you can knock em out of the sky easily at 80 yards,
so all you have to do is let them come in close, its hard on the system and patience , let yer buddy open up on them
then on his second or 3rd shot you can start with yer 10 gauge
whats seem to be the problem with that????? besides, patience and self restraint??

80 ???? Thats to far for lead .

Seriously....I once shot a passing goose that was able to fly for a while before it dropped into the lake. It travelled about 200 yards before it dropped. I guess that means my gun/shot/choke combination is good out to at least 200 yards....doesnt matter that it was only about 20 yards away at time of trigger pull

80 yard shots??? I suspect you’d be surprised to know how many yards you are really shooting at....

I use a rangefinder and set up little flags similar to those used for marking utility lines at 20 ,30 ,40,50,60,70,80,90,100, yards in 5 different directions from the layout blinds, its a pain in the ass and add a lot of walking and time to the set up, but it helps with the green horns and not so experienced hunters in the group, and for those that cant judge distance, by the end of the season they have their distance estimations down pretty good, just one thing I learned from an old timer years ago

Careful, when I questioned this, I got dressed down for having never shot a 10ga. I have only ever used a 3.5” 12, which is apparently vastly inferior with its 7 less pellets and all.
