Goose Hunting on the Cheap? Post ideas!

On the cheap... When we where kids we used a big burlap bag spray painted as a ground blind and for decoys, we took three 5gal pails, split them in half, painted them like a goose and made wooden heads for them.

We killed lots of geese

So I guess you used the burlap as a wall and hid behind it on the edge of a field? Or was it a blind with a roof? I have a big piece of camo burlap and I thought I could dress that up with found stuff out of whatever field I am in, lie down and just pull it over me like a pop up blind.

That's what we did, and actually still do lots. Put lots of straw ect on top and lie underneath it on our backs. Dig in a little if you can and make a head rest. I always throw a decoy right on top of me.

Works great but can get cold in the late season.

Do some scouting and get permission for a field with birds. Offer up a hunt and I'll bet some of the guys with equipment will be glad to help you out. Cheers Bac4

Yea great advice, my hunting partner and I have over $3000 invested in layout blinds and full body decoys and asssociated gear. Just what we would do, invite someone to hunt who is too cheap to buy a few decoys. Have hunted with more than our share of those guys....good luck with that.:yingyang:

My friends and I have spent a fair bit
But our first season out we had 3 floaters, and a good caller

We sat in a tree line beside a pond

scout, and spend money on a good call, flutes maybe cheap, and easy to learn on, but you are very limited.

Good luck

My buddies and I have bought about 3 dozen full bodies, 4 dozen shells, and we're all in lay out blinds, but if someone is a no show some week-end, we invite someone else and they borrow a blind.
We like to think that if we can give them a good day of goose hunting, they will be hooked, and our flock will grow (we need more floaters, and new regulars will have to buy a layout blind and floaters to be part of us)

This is exactly it for us as well, show them a good time in hopes to recruit new hunters. They might not have the time a finances now but down the road they may.... Promoting our sport is what it is all about.

Nothing wrong with showing a guy what it's all about. I never would have started duck hunting if a couple friends with decoys, canoes, blinds, etc., didn't take me out. Now I have my own canoe, decoys, waders, etc.

What's a good caller vs. A flute? I have a call which is a tube and seems to work well, but takes a ton of practice.

LOL don't laugh.... is there a regulation on what i am allowed to use to shoot geese?

i want to set up with a .17hmr and shoot the geese is that allowed?

I am in South Western Ontario

That's such a great idea--and to everyone who does something similar, I'm impressed. When I get my CORE (BC) I won't have the funds to get much gear--a cheap
Mossberg and a few boxes of shells will be something I'll have to work extra for. There is no way many newbies could get into the sport, or even find out if they like it. Heck, how do you find out if you even like the taste of goose enough to invest? Sorry to hear it hasn't worked out for some guys, but don't assume they are cheap because they didn't invest hundreds or thousands of $ before they've had a chance to try it out.

It doesn't have to be expensive...
Met a guy this week who has goose hunted for many years with great success. We met while we were hunting the same spot of water. Anyways, as we talking I noticed that he set out two floater geese decoys and nestled up to a tree. He explained to me that you just need to be in the right place and use the right call. Shortly there after he proceeds to call in two flocks back to back. It was cool to see. He shot his geese packed up and left. He was only wearing a green sweatshirt and jeans...
Before he left, he told me that his 870 was a "hand me down" and his total investment (not including ammo) is about $150.

So it is possible.

Sorry, I was talking about short reed calls.
Look at calls like the zink calls, or GK.
Any call you get you should practice as much as you can. Youtube is great, but so is listening to the birds, and just trying to do what they do.

Since you've already bought a call, use that for now, you should be able to do atleast some honks and clucks, and that's a great start.

Good luck, and don't over call.

I made some homemade silouettes using the old seed variety signs you see placed along th road side that identify what brand of seed is planted there.

They are core-plast, that plastic cardboard. I just traced out the shape from the few decoys I do own, painted them with krylon spraypaint and used a welding rod to stick em in the ground.

They are cheap and light, I can carry 2 dozen in one hand.

put an ad on kijiji wanted cheap goose decoys you will be surprised what you find. or just flight shoot its very effective on cloudy or windy days. because poor quality decoys generally work poor. but inexpensive cheap wooden silhoiuttes seem to work.

Come to southern Manitoba. Point gun toward sky, pull trigger. Birds will fall.

I've pressure-washed my house twice this week to get all the birdcr@p off.

My 'Power washer' hoses them with BB shot . . . .:shotgun::shotgun:

I have a couple of those 'power washers' too:D

I have heard and read that the waterfowl hunting out your way is absolutely amazing.
