If I may offer my .02 cents worth here. There is one or 2 fellas here offering some good advice. No 1, get rid of that cornfield camo burlap, those birds are flying over that field every day? They arent seeing corn in a disced grain field! But they are when you show up with it, can you say alarm bell ringing?! Next, if your layout blind is equipped with stubble straps then start stubbling it to match that field! Keep doing it and walking back to look at it from all angles until it virtually disappears from view or blends really well. Next, invest $20 in a goose flag!! You say you are shooting traffic birds, you aren't on the "X" so you have to get their attention, make them think those decoys are real. Flag, flag, flag!! If they turn away when you quit flagging, flag some more, turn them back into you, if they lock onto you put the flag down and try to finish them with your calling, if you know how. If you arent proficient with the call then best bet is don't call at close distances for sure! Now as for decoys. If you cant afford good realistic decoys I understand wholeheartedly but if you can buy them! My hunting partner and I are currently running 6 dozen GHG Fullbody Honkers, 1 dozen DSD Honkers, 1 dozen FA Brand Lessers and 5 dozen real -geese silos( which we have flocked the heads on) when we need to bulk up. The GHG FB's and DSD FB's are so realistic we have yet to put out more than 2 dozen for 4 guys to shoot over this season.Our last hunt th two of us set out 15 decoys and hammered 16 geese by 8 am.If not at minimum invest in a flocking kit and flock the heads on your decoys. If you have enough leftover, do the tails as well. you will be amazed at how flocked decoys pull birds into 410 range!! Good luck in your future endeavours, want to really talk goose? As for decoy patterns? Well youre only running a dozen decoys so just make them look like a couple small family groups relaxing and eating away comftorably.
