The pet load for my Old man's .222 is a 50gr Hornady SPSX. Very accurate and not something you see everyday (especially in a hvybbl M700 from the early 70's topped with and equally seasoned Weaver scope, damn classy)

.22 WMR. Cheaper to shoot than factory loaded centerfire stuff, and it's less formal since you don't have to load up and save your brass. Powerful enough for longer shots, and explosive enough to make you go gigidy gigidy.

I agree...the .22 Magnum is an excellent gopher cartidge. :)

Good choice! I shoot a 222 with 50 gr SPSX bullets as well... fun little rifle.

Just starting to play with 204 with 32 v-maxes, not bad but can't get over 3900 fps. Have a few gophers and a crow with it so far, not enough evidence in yet but wondering if 223 with 40 grain V-max isn't more "explosive". Will need to test more :D

Any of those on your list would do the job.
Mine are;
- 22lr
- 221 Fireball (Remington XP-100. I can dream for the day to use it)
- 219 Donaldson Wasp
- 22-250
- 25-06.
I notice there are a number of you using the 219DW. Just got mine a short while ago and I'm still 'playing' with loads for it. Would like to hear gun & load details from those of you that are shooting one.

40X in 22-250 , 222, 6mm, 22LR . Haven't shot a gopher in over 10 years -
going thru wwwwwithdraaaawal out here.

was just out today enjoying vermin acrobatics with the 22-250 with 55gr blitzkings and the 17 hmr with 17gr v max and the 20 gr gamepoint. Everything worked well and I still have a big smile on my face.

The Old Man's is a pre-war M70. I don't remember the exact load but it does quite like 50gs Ballistic Tips. We're using 3031 but I can't remember the load.

I use 40. grain Ballistic Tips in my .22-250 with spectacular results. Both in accuracy, and extreme devastation to gopher unlucky enough to be in the cross hairs.

I picked up a Savage 17 HMR dirt cheap. Hope to shoot all gophers all weekend with the .204 and the following weekend with the HMR.

I have a .22 T bolt that does really well with Stingers. More devastating to gophers than regular .22 LR. For giggles my 22-250 does a job on longer shots using the Walmart whitebox loads. or various handloads. I have a box of the new Varmint Grenades and am looking for load data.
