Gopher hunt stories

I placed my crosshairs of the Mark4 M1 Leupold Duplex 4.5 x 15 x 50mm just under his belly where it meets the lighter colored Ontario limestone.

Intriguing indeed. Anyone ever "stun" a gopher or squirrel - by shooting just in front of it? It's often done unintentionally, when a tree/object is hit while the creature lies on it or climbs near it.

where abouts were you picking off groundhogs along the niagara escarptment

Hungry here: I'm hunting around the Singhampton, Rob Roy, Kolapore areas on top of the Niagara Escarpment. Easy diggings on top, the hogs like it that way.

I shot one super groundhog last Saturday.

I hit him in the neck with .22, 40gr Yellow Jacket from about 30 yards.
The guy went down started shaking and doing their usual little break dance, so
I run to him, at about 10 yards he gets up, I fired another one in the back,
he stops for a sec, but keeps crawling, at this point he was about two feet from
his hole, I get to him and fire another one in the back from about 3 yards.
He continues and escapes to his hole. I could not believe my eyes.

I can see you now, hovering over the rodent saying, "see you in hell dinnerplate....I mean groundhog!"

I went out today and shot one at 162 yards (measured with my range finder) with a .22, but it took me 3 shots to get him. I was shooting free hand which impressed me though.

Took my kids out shooting gophers for their first time yesterday. My boy was using my Winchester bolt .22 with peep sights and my daughter used my 10/22 that was housed in a stock created by my buddy IceHunter.
He did up the stock but didn't have a factory stock 10/22 action and barrel to put in it for the pics he wanted. After the pics were done, he told her to use it as it was all day. Both did well considering the heat as well as never shooting a live animal before. Daughter scored 3 head shots in a row out beyond 50 yards and my boy nailed one at about 30 yards as it was running right across from side to side from him.

Got whom: the gophers (dead), or the kids (hooked on gophering)?

I was wondering that myself...

P.S. Rick65Cat - awesome profile pic!

Thanks man, I think I found my calling in life...after about a 17 year drought of varmint shooting I'm into it hardcore now. Bought a new 10/22 as a backup to my original .22 I bought new in '86 then bought a Ruger M77 MkII in .204 with a Bushnell elite 3200 5-15x40 on it. Then bought a Remington SPS700 Varmint in .223 with a Bushnell Elite 3200 4-12x40 on that. Then I bought 100s of rounds each for the .223 and .204 plus CASES of .22 and then bought a press, dies and MANY pounds of powder to start loading the .223 and .204.
Hopefuly my kids love grow to shooting as much as I do.

Am I addicted?

Hey guys look what I found today gopher hunting in my usual field! My first two badgers ever. The farmer who owns the land has been bugging me for months to get rid of them, but honestly I've never seen any until today. Man did they stink!
Hit them with my .223 at about 80 yards, both with headshots.
Craziest part was that I only got about 25 gophers on the day and I saw two coyotes that only just got away from me too!
