A Resident may, without a licence and on land to which he or she has the right of access, hunt (but not trap) coyote at all times of the year throughout the province, except as follows:
1) on public lands in the Green Area, only from October 1, 2006 to February 28, 2007, and
2) in Camp Wainwright (WMUs 728 and 730), only from December 12, 2006 to February 28, 2007.

Click here for information on coyote hunting for control of livestock predation. Subject to the exception (*) below, a Non-resident or Non-resident Alien who holds a valid Non-resident/Non-resident Alien Wolf/Coyote Licence may hunt coyote on lands to which he or she has the right of access at all times of the year throughout the province - except on public lands in the Green Area where the season is from October 1, 2006 to February 28, 2007.
*Exception: if a big game season (other than a cougar season) is open in the area he or she is hunting, then the Non-resident or Non-resident Alien hunter of coyotes must possess a current big game licence issued for that area and open season.

I hope so as that is another good excuse sorry reason to own a farm!
Mind you I spent a few nights out on the wainright prairies armed only with blank ammo listening to the howling and wishing for some fmjs at least!

Don't forget to buy yourself a 'gopher call' at wholesale sports. I've got one...they work like a charm. We've shot coyotes that show up for an easy meal. They know that gunfire = tasty gopher guts. They'll try to stay out of range until you've left...but the centrefires can reach out and touch them. Watch out for those pesky Badgers..:)

Halford Hides in Edmonton buys them. I've heard some Hudderite colonies will take them as well. If your hunting them for their hides, there's no point during the summer. Their hides are the best early winter.

Superd222, you won't need a license on private land. Despite what some people think, Yotes aren't easy animals to hunt. Calling them in with hand calls is TOUGH!!!!! Don't get your hopes up.:D

On gophers use at least a 300 Win Mag with a well constructed premium grade bullet (something that will hold together well and retain most of its weight as well as punch through both sides to leave a good blood trail). It's important to remember the kill zone is not that big - only about an inch or so on large adult males so bullet placement is critical. Take only shots at 100 meters or less where bullet velocity and energy will still be quite high to minimize wounding and possibly losing a fine game animal. :)

Whoever mentioned using a 12 guage is on the right page. one day I went through a couple bricks of 22lr, and 250 trap loads for the 12ga. Talk about fun. This spring, I should have my XCR so I will try picking em off with that too :D

Ican't wait to shoot gophers

Don't ever go undergunned. I'll tell you one time about when we got charged by a squirrel. It was a good thing my buddy was quick withthe scattergun. I think he was after nuts.:onCrack:

Anyone around edmonton know the best areas around the city to go asking about shooting Gophers :p

Would love to even meet up with someone somewhere for a day of shooting :)

I figure if the weather starts to act right they should start coming out of their holes in a 2-3 weeks.
I mean if I keep my fingers crossed.

There was an ETR range on Wainwright camp where there would hop about all morning or at least until you ran out of ammo!

I am in Calgary and I am ITCHING to go gopher hunting, I even have an extra cooey .22 to lend if someone will take me along!

I also have about 1k rounds of .22lr I am looking to "dispose" of!

So anyone in Calgary going out in the next few weeks keep me in mind!

Buy your ammo here, no PST less luggage etc. If the farmer allows it, shoot from inside your vehicle when you're on his land as you don't spook the sabre toothed bastards even when shooting up a storm. Put a towel over the defroster vents in the dash or your buddy will have empty brass rattling around forever and maybe even a leaky heater core down the road. A fence breaks up your outline also allowing you to get close and lotsa gophers live by the posts. Be careful, they put out decoys to fool ya, even in your scope those rocks look like they have eyes.
