I was just reading through the Alberta gopher hunting thread and it got me thinking about doing the same here in Manitoba. Since I've not spent very much time in the fields (I'm more inclined to head out to Sandilands) I'm not sure how strong the gopher population is in Manitoba. I remember getting more than a few gophers with my pellet gun when I was a kid but the area was not a good place to use even a rimfire.

Anyhow. Is the Manitoba gopher population worth doing some planning over or should I expect to travel a little further West for a shoot?

We used to shoot a lot of them in the SW corner of the province back in the day, down around Reston and thereabouts (family farms from there west). I have no idea what the population is like now, but as SK had a HUGE explosion in thier gopher population not too far from there, I would expect it to be pretty good. - dan

I have uncles in the Pierson / Tilson area, not far from Reston. I'm told the gopher population isnt that great anymore. Must be some climate change thing. I might take a trip to western Saskatchewan next summer. I have an in-law that can hook me up with a family farm that is plagued by them.

We did our deer hunt around Pierson last year. It looked like a great area for gophers but of course we were way too late to see any. Perhaps I'll drag the camper out to Saskatchewan in the spring.

I do have a line on a groundhog town near Winnipeg but so far my contact has been very secretive and we haven't had the chance to go yet.

I`ve seen plenty of the critters along Bishop Grandin Blvd. closer towards Hyw.59.Too bad it`s in the city limits.
While working at McCains foods in Portage La Prairie ,I would see dozens of them in and around the area. They had a good size town going along the gravel roads.I was planing on scouting the area out next year outside of town.
