Hey y'all,

I'm out by red deer and don't know much about shooting on crown lands etc. I have only shot at ranges. Wanted to shoot some gophers around here. Are you aloud to shoot them on crown land? Or have to know some people with land infested with gophers?

Thanks

Check your hunting regulations for Alberta.
There it will explain where and how far etc to be away from buildings and outbuildings.

You need to find a land owner with pasture.

Someone usually knows someone. Or pull in to a farm and be polite, ask politely if you can hunt gopher in their pasture, give them a land location, and be polite. Did I mention be polite? Lol.

Fill up the truck (or car) with a tank of fuel and head out. Once you find some gophers ask politely if the landowners would like some help "removing" some of those rodents.

I think it's been mentioned once or twice, but be polite! Haha.

Lol thanks I'll be very polite. I didn't know how that works wasn't sure if farmers be ok with going on their LaND.

Lots of farmers will allow someone who politely asks to help with gopher control. Darn few farmers will allow someone to just wander onto their land and start shooting stuff.

Find a spot; get permission. If you are refused, politely go on your way and maybe try again next year. If you are allowed, be thoughtful, leave all gates as you found them, shoot safely, and maybe send a thank you note. Land owners like respect for both them and their land.

rral22, just hit another nail on the head...........even if you have been refused ...BE POLITE AT ALL TIMES.......the farmer may have good reason for refusing, like cows calving or sheep lambing and it may only be temporarily unavailable..........be a jerk when he says no and you can pretty much guarantee it will be permanently unavailable.

Nothing says thank you like a bottle of rye. Bring a bottle with you and offer it to anybody who lets you shoot on their land when you are done.

I've got a couple old guys who love it when I come by to shoot gophers, cuz I always bring them a bottle for the privilege of letting me shoot on their land. Just don't let their wives see you give them booze.

Gophers are pests. The new poisons don't work worth a damn either. Might make a new friend. :d Populations are going to depend on what kind of spring we have. Warm dry, good for gophers, cold damp, not so much.

Post an ad at the local UFA or nearest grain elevator. I had a few good weekends of gopher hunting using that method.
Some landowners even offered to pay for ammo. I politely declined of course.
Just getting out of the city to do some shooting was payment enough.
