Hi, I am going to Saskatchewan this summer and would like to go gopher shooting. I am going to be in Herbert, is there anybody that knows of a guide or someone I can contact for more info. near there? thanks in avance, ribber

you don't need a guide. You just need to talk to farmers, ranchers, and landowners and they will tell you where to find the gophers. 3 phone calls should get you into some shooting. You could always get ahold of the RM office and they should tell you who would be the best to talk to.

Gopher guide! haha!

This is SK, you walk up to farmhouse, say

"Hi, I'm _____ from _____ and I'm in Herbert for a week. I'd like to shoot some gophers. I'll buy you a bottle if you can point me to lots of gophers"

They'll probably have you in for dinner.

In the US there are some big guiding outfits that charge a fortune to shoot gophers. Still cracks me up to think about it!

Seems crazy to us but I can see the advantage.

Not everyone is happy to have people they don't know come on thier land with firearms. A local guy who can act as a liaison for the shooter can find the best land for the current conditions.

Many times I would come home from the city to shoot gophers, and even though I knew all the farmers and ranchers, many times missed out. To often when a local said he had lots, it meant that he saw the same dozen gophers doing chores every day. Of course it seemed like hundreds to him, but I didn't even empty one magazine.

Or another case of when a pasture had lots of gophers but the wknd I was home ended up being just a few days before the cattle were released onto it and the grass was so tall it hid them all.

Back to the OP's question.

What time of year are you going?

The best time is May-June, they are still out later but the vegetation grows and they are harder to see (except in a drought but each year can be different).

If you are visiting family or friends have them knocking on doors well in advance of your arrival. It will be to your advantage to a have a local ask other locals for gopher shooting opportunities. Plus have several locations to got to the time you are there, in case one is overgrown, another was recently poisoned, the next one has cattle on it, another has been flooded by rains, etc.

If I was closer I would offer to help out but I an in SE Sask, (and may be gone by spring). Would be nice if a CGNer could hook you up.

I saw a website for one that supplied hamburgers after shooting.

They supplied the hamburger but you supplied the buns and condiments.......made me wonder what's in the free hamburgers. (hint: it's a gopher hunting facility). YUK

Previous post had it right.
Asking at the RM office or local Co-Op will likely have you in touch with a willing landowner in no time.
Nothing works better than being polite, following instructions, closing gates, etc. to make you welcome in Saskatchewan.

My cousin lives out there in Herbert, but she knows nothing about licences and seasons etc., but your replies are answering a lot of questions for me. I'll try the local co-op and see what I can find out.thanks for the help, ribber

There are no licenses or seasons. You just shoot them

that is correct. shoot away. i think there is a subway there too. 411 these places coop and RM offices and get their phone numbers. they may even put up a poster for you in advance if you contact them early enough. I have heard of some of these ranchers doing things such as room and board to shoot. in the past few years rumor is that some of the crops look like a lawn mower mulched it all down, so all these guys are left with is expenses.

Herbert is in the exact, precise dead center of gopher shooting country, and it is a BIG circle around. Depending on the Spring, there could be gophers crawling up your legs, or it could be tough to find some to shoot. Last year, 2011, was an odd year. Where I have shot for a couple of years, I got in two real good two-day shoots, then - poof! - it poured rain a couple of times, and I couldn't even find a fresh hole, let alone any gophers.

I shot down around Mankota in 2006, and you wouldn't believe the damage in places unless you were there. I am a good Prairie farm boy, and one place I shot, I had to ask the farmer what was supposed to be growing in two fields. The fields were mostly bare!

PM me and I'll see if we can't maybe get together for a shoot. :)

I live near Herbert. You won't have any trouble getting permission to shoot gophers. But the really huge infestation is past. Last I heard about 10 miles straight south was stiil excellent. PM me if you need to know more.

Again, thanks guys, looks like I'll knock on some doors when I get there, I was worried about showing up with a rifle and running into a big hassle, ribber

It's Sask. Good luck finding a farmer without a rifle and lots of people in small towns too.
