In the US there are some big guiding outfits that charge a fortune to shoot gophers. Still cracks me up to think about it!
Seems crazy to us but I can see the advantage.
Not everyone is happy to have people they don't know come on thier land with firearms. A local guy who can act as a liaison for the shooter can find the best land for the current conditions.
Many times I would come home from the city to shoot gophers, and even though I knew all the farmers and ranchers, many times missed out. To often when a local said he had lots, it meant that he saw the same dozen gophers doing chores every day. Of course it seemed like hundreds to him, but I didn't even empty one magazine.
Or another case of when a pasture had lots of gophers but the wknd I was home ended up being just a few days before the cattle were released onto it and the grass was so tall it hid them all.
Back to the OP's question.
What time of year are you going?
The best time is May-June, they are still out later but the vegetation grows and they are harder to see (except in a drought but each year can be different).
If you are visiting family or friends have them knocking on doors well in advance of your arrival. It will be to your advantage to a have a local ask other locals for gopher shooting opportunities. Plus have several locations to got to the time you are there, in case one is overgrown, another was recently poisoned, the next one has cattle on it, another has been flooded by rains, etc.
If I was closer I would offer to help out but I an in SE Sask, (and may be gone by spring). Would be nice if a CGNer could hook you up.
