where i hunt groundhogs in ontario there is hilly ground and lots and lots of fencerows. about half the time the dirtpigs get away because they pop up much too close for me to shoot them with a varmint gun, or they are 20 yards away amongst rockpiles or rows of dredged up rocks at the edge of the fields. im not crazy enough to shoot into rocks 20 yards away with a rifle.
for years ive entertained the idea of taking a nice compact shotgun along for the close shots and rockpile shots. until now this wasnt a possibility since my old varmint gun weighed ~15lbs and it was uncomfortable enough to carry without adding another 10lbs of shotgun and shells to the mix. but for this year i built a lighter weight groundhog gun so i am seriously thinking about taking a short shotgun along just for kicks.
what a suprise itll be for the little $hits that pop up 15 feet away from me
the only reason im hesitant about it is i dont want to look like some gung-ho mall ninja retard with 2 guns strapped to me. i try my best to maintain a responsible and respectable appearance when hunting on other peoples land and that might not exactly help

I've used my Boito Hiker .410, with the cheapest shells I can find, its good for when they charge, yes, I said when they charge, I was shooting gophers 2 weekends ago (before the snow storm) and we had 2 charge, very hard to hit them with a high powered scope and bolt action, but a .410 is very effective. Not sure what possesses them to run at you sometimes.

craziest thing i ever saw was one of them just standing there chattering away while my unfortunate friend emptied an entire mag of an old SEARS .22 that had apparently lost its zero all around it.
