Gopher talk

Went out on thursday with my Dad, two 10/22's and the .17hmr and my JW15A compact, probably got around 100-120 between the both of us from 9am till noon and then the rain rolled in and it put a halt to their movement, Would have been a great day if it had stayed sunny the whole time, Also Iam very impressed with the GSG 110 round drum mags, first time using it and not a single issue!

^nice! How did the JW compact do? Any photos of it in gopher-slaying mode? What scope do you have on it? I have one of these guns...looking for a job. :)

No pics in gopher slaying mode unfortunately. Theres usually too many running around to stop for photo ops. But heres the rifles cleaned and ready to go the night before.
Second one down, It has a cheapo walther 6x scope on it, but it does fairly well, I find the gun is accurate enough only to about 50 yards. Previously it had a 3-9x32 and then a 3-9x40, but Wanted to mount this little guy on something. The guns trigger is incredibly light coming in at only 2lbs, Its nothing I did to it just how it came.

Keepin' the thread alive. Another day in the same place. Today's count 264, got out a little earlier, tagged a few more than Wed. Grass is getting long in one of the pastures but the gopher call works just fine. Cows will chew it down in the next couple of weeks, I'll go back for more.

The gopher call works?

Grass is getting waay to long around here... Even with the cows...

Graphic pics

A few pics from today. No innocent by-standers were harmed. The long stock ultra and the lux resting on the Chair-pod. Love the results from the Waltz modded Win 555. The call get's em standing up.

As you can see from the photos, traffic was brutal on the way out. I think I saw a car in the distance once, although it might have been a dust devil.

30 degrees in the afternoon kept the gophers (smarter than me) in their nice cool holes for a good chunk of the day. Did most of my shooting with my 795 again, but also brough along my old CIL-Anschutz, which is still a tack driver, even though it's older than me. Tagged a half dozen with the Anschutz, some close in shots with the .410 (maybe another half dozen), and emptied all three banana mags on the 795 a couple of times, plus extras. It's nice to be able to borrow the gator to tool around in and haul the guns and ammo. There were some misses (of course), but ran a total of 157 for the day.

Plus a minor case of heat stroke. Eating pickles to make sure I don't get cramps after I go to bed tonight.

I also do like to have a gopher call with me.

It won't make them come out to "play" but it often gets them to stick thier head up enough that I can see the fella that's squeaking and then blast him.

I've had three so far, darn things are camo and nearly impossible to see when dropped

I'm neglecting my 40 yr old CIL/Anschutz 310 in favour of the CZ 452 guns. Like the bolt better on the CZ. I hear you on missed shots, wind was brutal today. Puts a smile on though, when you connect with one that's waaaay out there and it goes bang-flop. That "bok" sound never gets old.

Yeah, the old CIL-Anschutz - mine's a 125 - has a stiff to work bolt. Not near as fun to work as the CZ's, but shorter and handier than my 452 Lux. I just fear losing the mag for it - replacement mags run $75 - although they still make them, Weatherby took over that mag style for their .22s

I'm going to need to break out the 452 again - I've been leaving it behind because it's all dialed in for the CCI Quick Shots (the hyper velocity Segmented Hollow Points), and I'm down to my last 6 or 7 hundred rounds of that... That's a couple or three days of heavy work in the gopher patch.

But... dayum... Those rounds hit the gophers like a grenade. And reach? Zeroed at 25yards, 3/4 inch high at 50 yards, zeroed at 75 yards, 2 inches low at 100, and grouping just barely over an inch at that distance. Just whistle, get 'em to stand up, and aim for the neck. Anything out to 100 yards is done for. Can't wait until its widely available again, and I can set aside 10K + rounds this time.

The 795 suffered a tragic "falling out of the gator" incident at the end of the day. No real damage, but knocked the scope off. Going to need to re-zero it. Nice thing about the 795 is that I don't mind abusing it, and it eats whatever ammo I can find equally well. But 75 yard shots with it are a bit of a stretch. Great accuracy out to 50 yards though.

The gopher call works?
..

I got one as a gag gift a few years ago and decided to put it to work this year. It does work in moderation but one must use it sparingly in the same field or they'll figure it out. They're a little on the expensive side for what they are, and I've had similar results blowing over a spent .22 case when I was younger.

My shooting partner called and asked when I was coming back! Spent 3 1/2 days and I shot 3000+ rounds. Him the same. He was called by a rancher and spent 4 hours of near constant shooting. He knew I could not make it down. Nice to have friends.
