Hey guys, not sure if this is ammo or hunting so here goes. I want to use my 300 win mag for ground hogs and gophers. Does anyone have a line on some highly frangible 30cal bullets? Anything I can find is for large to medium game and bonded ect for long distance and mass retention. I am a little shy of ricocheting bullets from this powder burner so I was hoping to find something that would break up on contact. Yes I know I should use something in a more commonly used cal but I want to vaporize em with it........no real reason, just because I can.

Vmax should work well. I would suggest, however, that you buy only one box at a time. I really doubt this plan will last all that long. ;)

Thanks guys, I found the vmax bullets.........I was having a hard time finding them......I missed them when I searched under the cal listing, found them under varmint......oh dear..........any way, it would have been nice to have something specifically designed to disintegrate on impact. I realize I am not likely to go thru thousands of rounds............I simply like the idea of pounding them hard. The win mag is certainly not the most efficient cal for it and definitely not the cheapest, but then again a 50 bmg is awful attractive to me as well. I am not likely going to go thru hundreds of rds, not sure I have enough targets for that. I could however see myself really reaching out the ranges just to push myself. If I bore of the game I may back down to a 22-250.

Cost is only one measure in the effectiveness of a particular round and a minor consideration at that. I think that the true value is the satisfaction in being out there, pulling the trigger and enjoying the outdoors. For all I will likely shoot in a season, the extra fuel to push the pill, is hardly even a consideration. I will burn more in gas looking for something to shoot at. A good day may see 10 or 15 opportunities, and the hogs will soon dry up after a few hunts like that. Optimistically, I may go thru a box a year at best.......cost of shells is nothing in the context. It kicks a bit more but that is what a shooting pad is for, and the noise.......I double up every time a shoot.

Barnes makes a .30 version of the Varmint Grenade, but they call it MPG (multi-purpose green). They are made in 140 and 150 gr.

I have know idea if these have made it north of the border yet.

If Speer still makes their excellent 130gr HP bullet, it is a dandy for small varmints. [Edit: I see it is still listed on their website]
I have shot hundreds of Columbian Ground Squirrels with this bullet in a 30-06, and the results are dramatic.
Also generally found it more accurate than most 110 grain offerings in the big 30's

I would use whatever load that I was going to hunt bigger game with, like a 165gr or 180gr.
For a while I used 130 gr in my 270. If I hit them they did not crawl away. And I recall one that did not get hit at all and it was as dead as a door nail, I hit the ground below it and after 3 or 4 black flips it took a dirt nap.
They make great target practice.

Man, that makes gopher shooting an expensive option. Awful lot of powder just to pop a gopher. Your call however. I use 110g VMax's in my .308 for 'yotes and am going to try them on gophers this year. But even that is fairly expensive.
