Gophers out in SW Alberta yet

Only 2 weeks before I am in the fields.

Are the buggers out yet?
Is there any/much snow around?

Yeah, the gophers around here have been up for about a month now. We got about 6" of snow last night but it's melting fast.

It's odd - the field I hunt in yearly usually has THOUSANDS by this time of year. I was out for 4 hours this morning, and only shot about 30.

Has anyone else noticed a decrease this year, or is it just that I was too dang efficient last year?

Pretty much. However you might want to be polite and respectful. Most people that have lot's of gophers will be happy to have a polite, respectful guy help them out.
