I just got back from a little trip with some family out to the gopher patch. I brought my outlaw in hopes of catching one of those sneaky ones that come in behind you while you are focused somewhere else, or any other oportunity.
The first one was pretty lucky. I was laying all cozy on my blanket with my spotter, picking off some 300 yd gophers and everything was perfect. You can see I had my outlaw handy incase one popped up close.
When my spotter went get us some Oreo Cakesters from the truck, I happened to scan around and saw something about 20 yds away in the background of the above pic. I couldnt tell if it was a gopher or a stick so as I loaded the shotgun I said out loud "Hey gopher! Are you a gopher or a stick?!?" Just then he turned to look at me as if saying "Who? Me?" Having confirmed that, and that there was nobody in the way, I cocked back a hammer and let fly. He caught at least 4 pellets from my plain old walmart 2-3/4" 7.5 shot.
It was a good clean kill. Quicker than many .22 hits too.
After the kids went back to the house to play with the dogs, I decided I had gotten enough sun, but wanted more gophers. So I just grabbed a lawn chair and plunked myself down in the shade, about 25 yds from a bunch of gopher holes. Water bottle in hand and the Outlaw on my lap I ony had to wait about 20 minutes before they forgot I was there and got my next gopher. And another, and another! Haha that was fun. I love this gun. I am getting decent at loading and unloading the empties too.
It seems like 25 yds is optimal for 7.5 shot. I tried a couple times from 4o yds and I suppose I could have gotten lucky if I tried letting loose with both barrels, but with a single shot, there was just too much air between all the pellets and they managed to squeak through. The shade was beckoning me anyway.
So there you have it, my little gopher/outlaw story.
What an awesome trip. The long, HOT drive home in the truck since the AC quit is a small price to pay. Although I think I will fork out the $$$ to get it fixed!
