Gophers

Another 75 today between 2 of us. Grass is longer and they are getting smarter. Those Winchester .22 LR 40gr Hypers 1435fps really smack em down when within a 100m though.

Yesterday we got back out to the farmer's fields we were in on Monday. Another ~400 leaving the corn alone! This time out they were definitely more skittish, but there's still another shoot in that field yet! Hopefully get back on Monday or Tuesday.

Out yesterday, a 100+. The grass is tall and if they are not standing it is hard to spot. They sometimes stand for a call. Came over a small hill to find 2 badgers at 30 yds . They won't be digging up any more pasture. ( Rancher asked to shoot any I seen) There are more weasels this year than I have seen in years. Nice to see them. I hope to get out onto a horse pasture this next week as they have kept the grass low and there are lots of gophers.

The sun was hot, the wind was low, the grass was up, the gophers went down, the 452 Ultra Lux shot fine. 102 down for the count, moved around the pasture quite a bit, lots of patience, rotating the chair and scanning for furry targets. Best shot lasered at 133 yrds. Nice to shoot in almost calm conditions.

Made it out to one of my regulars today. First time this season, 178 down. Saw one with a nasty skin condition, upon closer examination, found maggot type chit growing inside this fresh kill. Also a view from the shooting seat.

Couple dozen today after dinner.

Canola is up, so those fields are done for gopher shooting for the season.

The ones left in the pasture are a tad smarter, so no close in shots. Fortunately, they're a lot fatter than they were even a few weeks ago.

BOY do I wish I hadn't looked at this while eating my breakfast. lol That's pretty nasty, I think you did that gopher a favor!

I agree on doing the favor. Didn't want to step on it for fear of getting a shower of unmentionable "stuff" Can't imagine the suffering the critter was going through.

Previous gunshot wound maybe. In any case, you definitely did it a favor!

Been seeing one in the front yard the past few days on my way to the shop.

Took my Shultz & Larsen along with me today and picked him off in the flower bed.

Since I had the gun with me I took a slow drive past the neighbor's pasture and bagged perhaps a dozen. Love the accuracy of this gun, I suspect that the 10/22 will be collecting dust from now on.

2 of us popped off another 50 yesterday. Few and far between in our spot. That was over an 8 hour period. Good time none the less.

'bout par for the course this time of year. The grass is high, they're harder to spot, and the dumb one are already dead.

Another great day spent in a pasture. Another one of my regulars, although I wasn't there last year. 128 down between 11:30 and 4:30, started to rain from a nasty cloud that rolled in. The 452 Lux does truly shine. The wind caused quite a few misses, needing more than a gopher width on longer shots. It did help to ward off the heat some though.
