So I am new to shooting and I mostly just have pistols. But I have aquired a new rifle and am having tons of fun with it. I would like to take it out of the range though and try gopher shooting. Since I dont know anyone who shoots or anyone who owns any farm land I was wondering how one would go about finding a nice spot to shoot at some gophers for an afternoon. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Head out of town and look for some fields with natural grassland rather than cultivated land. Go to nearest farms and ask if they have any land where you could shoot.

It is like any other hunting with smaller targets. Ask the farmers, politely, if you can shoot on their land, where you can shoot and which directions. Close any gates you open and stay away from livestock. When you are done let the landowner know you are leaving and thank them at least 6 times for the privilege of smoking their tunnel rats.

I go gopher shooting every weekend, I'm just waiting for my daughter to show up, and we are out of here. Go to the Onoway area, start asking the farmers if you can shot gophers, you won't have to ask very many and you'll be up to your eyeballs in gopher guts.

In BC, it does not require a hunting license. We aren't gopher/coyote/marmot/skunk... "hunting", we're acting as agents for the property owner/leasee and preventing further destruction of property, livestock and crops by eliminating pest animals. What we are doing is actually closer to "trapping" as defined by the BC trapping regulations.

PunkRockBoy: Canada is an exceedingly large and diverse place. One should be somewhat cautious when it comes to making blanket statements that could result in somebody incurring significant penalties.

Agreed thank you for your more through answer. Now I guess I just need to find a property owner I can be an agent for :p

Alright, thanks guys. I just wasn't sure how receptive farmers would be to someone just showing up at their door wanting to shoot stuff.

Even under the best of circumstances, you get mixed reactions. It helps a lot when you know someone local to vouch for you or set it up.

"...showing up at their door wanting to shoot stuff..." You do that ahead of time. Don't go on Sunday, have a firearm or wearing camouflage clothing. Ask politely and if the landowner says no, thank him and leave. Doesn't hurt to ask if he knows somebody who might let you though
