Ok Ok Ok. Don't all answer at once. Now I realize that nobody wants a stranger to come onto their land, and put an end to the fun of blasting those little diggin' b*stards. My plea obviously went out to the wrong crowd, (you all have your own guns and probably enjoy blowing them up on your own). Perhaps a helpful hint in where to go where they are plentiful? I am in Winnipeg, and I have a friend who lives out by 317, and he says that there are not alot around there. I often go around the Milner Ridge area for plinking and I have never seen any there. Where are these stinkin' gophers!!!? Please? Pretty please?
With a .22-250, I suggest you find some BIG fields which means farther away from Wpg. Farmers don't mind a .22LR, but will be hesitant of a stranger with a high velocity CF rifle. Just the way it is sometimes.

I don't have a problem with travelling an hour or two, I just don't know which direction to go. . I have heard that the Brandon area may have some, but how many are some? On other occasions I have heard that some people have shot as many as several hundred on a weekend (but nobody seems to remember where that was). I do also have a Ruger 10/22 that I would bring along in case the Rangemaster needs a chance to cool off. But the Rangemaster is the one I am drooling over.
I'd be guessing anywhere West of Winnipeg, and possibly Southwest, but I remember on the way to Oak Lake West of Winnipeg, there were lots of rolling hills and open fields for miles, I'd say try around that area, and that's just South of Brandon. I'd say just scout around that area, or anywhere Southwest of Winnipeg.............
There really isn't that many places near WPG loaded with gophers. I have only been able to find one location with decent numbers near town and I'm saving it for when the new pups emerge. However, If you're headed out to Brandon I would suggest taking the #2 out and start looking for pasture land once you get past Long Plains. We had some really good shoots on the southeast side of Brandon.
You have to go outto SW Manitoba. Gophers (Richardsons Ground Squirells) like pastured fields. Makes it easy to spot them too. This is the best time of the season to make high kills but mother nature has to cooperate... need calm days warm with plenty of sunshine. I use a .222 Rem sako heavybarrel. Quiet and kills like crazy. Have a 22-250 but this is too much gun IMHO.
