Went to the gunsmith a few months back, got chatting and he pulled this beauty out. It's a clients gun but he was kind enough to let me snap a few pics. Absolutely one of the most gorgeous Mausers I have ever laid eyes on. I believe it to be what they call a guild gun, markings on the barrel are "Val Kern" "Nurnberg" "Krupp-Lauft??ld" "25-35". Caliber I assume is 25-35 Winchester. The flip up peep was really neat, spring loaded with elevation adjustment. Also had a nice 4 round cartridge trap in the butt stock. Case hardening was beautiful as was the tapered octagonal barrel. Of course I said if the owner EVER wanted to sell it to please let me know, what I would give for such a beauty. Enjoy!

How does one cycle the bolt with that peep sight? Does the sight get pushed down and then spring back up every time?

There was no scope with the rifle, I would assume the owner removed it before dropping it off.

Good question about cycling the bolt with the peep, never thought about it but now that you mention it I was wondering what the hump on the peep body was all about, I think it's to allow for smooth cycling as the rear of the bolt wouldn't bind on a radiused surface. Think about it, if you're using a peep you have time to aim, after you take a shot you're either shooting at a mover where a peep isn't much use and the open sights come into play, or you have time to pop up the peep again and take another aimed shot, ingenious!

Edit: Just looked a couple more pics I have of it and the top of the radius does show contact. Hopefully I'll be by there in the next little while, if it's still there I'll take another look.

Val Kern was a distributor / reselller who had guns made especially for them (like Geco, if you want). They used to sell fancier grades guns with a lot of them made in Belgium. This one is a very nice commercial work, I suspect it was refinished, but the works seems to be above the average refinishing job.. Yes, the tang sight will flip down when the bolt is actioned. Usually, upon closing the bolt, the sight will flip up again, unless it is not well adjusted and get catched by the latch (the small brass botton is the latch release).

To each his own. Not very appealing to me.

At a risk of seeming like I want to start a mindless unwinnable internet argument...so...you bring what to this post? Why bother even commenting? Having a bad day and feeling the need to spread it around?
It seems like a pretty cool rifle, in a rather unique caliber. Among folks I know it'd be a cool conversation piece.
I'd be proud to own and shoot such a fine firearm.

Oh wow!

I also love the ammo storage in the buttstock, methinks that's pretty cool. :)

Being a European gun Im wondering why they stamped it as 25/35 and not 6.5x52R?

I believe the idea is to post your thoughts on the rifle. It says nowhere that you are only allowed to post if you think it's the greatest piece of artwork/machinery ever made.

On that note, It's nice to look at, but i wouldn't want to scratch/dent/bugger it up and devalue it, and I would because I don't own any safe queens.

How does it shoot i wonder? Form follows function in my books.

I'd only buy a rifle like that if I could get it for a song and sell at a profit. There seems to be no shortage of interested buyers :)

I love old mausers like that and this one is very nice, I would still hunt with it though. Nice guns are great but more fun if you use them.

Built in a time hunters didn't think they needed detachable mags, overpriced optics and magnum cartridges to be able to put venison on the dinner plate. If I owned that rifle (and had ammo for it) I'd totally be taking it out hunting for our island deer this weekend.

That rifle is like a fine guitar - to be admired and enjoyed by all, but played softly. Thank you for sharing that rifle. Now that is an example of quality and workmanship. The ammo storage in the stock is a cool idea too!
