A heads-up for anyone who might be interested: If you are into the high-gloss Weatherby look, Cabela's in Winnipeg has a lovely deluxe Vanguard with a beautiful piece of wood, complete with laser-engraving in lieu of checkering, in .257Wby and priced at $899. According to Weatherby Nation, this was a special run available only at Cabela's. I don't care for the oak-leaf stuff, but I walked out of the store with the gun right next to it: Vanguard Deluxe, standard checkering, with an unbelievable piece of walnut (sadly, the super-high-gloss finish), in .270Win, for the same price.

Someday I may refinish the wood in oil, but for now it'll stay as is. These are S2's, so they are MOA guaranteed and have triggers much improved over the older Vanguards. And, yes, I know...THIS THREAD IS WORTHLESS WITHOUT PICS! I'm just too lazy! But if you're browsing this, or another, Cabela's, take a look...you may fall in love.

I always thought the oil-finish Weatherby rifles were nicer than the high gloss. Many years ago I passed on a Mk. V in 7mm Wby with a stunningly beautiful stock. It was the Euromark, iirc. They also used to make the Classic, which had a classic style stock. You don't see too many of them around.

Yes, I once owned a MarkV Euromark and thought its stock finish was much nicer than the typical Weatherby gloss. In fact, it was that rifle, in .340, that taught me how effective the pronounced Monte Carlo comb was in dealing with recoil. Every time I pick up this new gun, I will be thinking about how much more I would like it with the oil finish. I just can't rationalize stripping off the factory finish on a brand-new, perfect-condition rifle. Maybe after it picks up a couple of nicks and dings...

When I found this thread I was intrigued by the thought of a somewhat different Vanguard, perhaps the illegitimate offspring of a Vanguard mateing with a Lazermark. After a little bit of brooding about my Vanguards outshooting my Mark Vs, and consideration of an extra scope or two lieing around I got to thinking that a flashy .257 for only 900 bones wasn't totally insane. So begins the saga:

I go through the website and can't find anything on the Lazerguard. There's a email for inquiries so I drop them a line, only get a link to a Lazermark Mark V. That would be great if I wanted a Lazermark Mark V. Oh well, there's a number to call for further help. I phone the number and they really don't have a clue what I'm talking about. They promise to phone back if they happened to find a clue, or someone who has one. Hmmm.

Next, I did what I probably should have done in the first place; call Winnipeg directly. That didn't start out all that well, being put on hold until a girl came on to say they were too busy to take calls and would phone me back. Although I had doubts about that ever happening, I didn't have much choice. Surprisingly someone did call back; not surprisingly he didn't know what a Lazerguard was either. Useing small words and a gentle voice I guided him through the description of the Cabellas exclusive model. Not a flicker. Next I told him that internet intel placed one on one their rack very recently. That seemed to cheer him up, and he went to the rack and looky here, a real honest to glittery goodness, firebreathing Lazerguard in .257, shineing like a new dime and had been there the whole time.

Aha, spoke I and requested that he pack it up and ship it forthwith to my humble and gun filled abode. Ah, no he can't do that, but he can give me the number to distribution and the article number and the clear and certain knowledge that they had exactly one. Somehow I can't shake a feeling that things weren't going quite as well as they appeared.

Next I phone back to the distribution center with the news and Visa card and PAL in my sweaty little hand. First they have nothing like that, and I tell them they do have one and that the saleman had held it in his hand as recently as a minute ago. I give the article number and she tells me they don't have any but have 60 on order. Yes, but I don't want 60 you see, just the one in Winnipeg. Could you send me that one and we will part as adversaries and not enemies? No, it doesn't work like that. Winnipeg can't ship it, and distributing can't ship it because its in Winnipeg, and Winnipeg can't ship it to distributing, and neither can ship it to the Saskatoon store because they don't do that either. I do ask if this was Cabellas, the same Cabellas that for decades has been shipping things, had a catalogue and website to order things? Yep, same place. Beginning to feel like I'm caught in some comedy skit, I thought that I'd take the bait and ask what she suggested I do. Believe it or not, she claims that there is no way that I can get that particular rifle short of driveing to Winnipeg and physically walking into that store. Or I can order one that they don't have, and wait for it not to come, for a time period that can't be predicted. Apparently that makes sense in her world.

Right now I'm torn between considering it a challenge and not wanting to own a rifle that that many stupid people have stood beside.

Anyone have any ideas?

And that, right there, is a perfect example of why I hate going to the city.:p I'd offer to help you out, Dogleg, but I doubt that I'll be back in town before the snow melts. If those plans change, I will let you know.

First off, my apologies for handing you the can of worms and the pointy stick with which to open it. I probably shouldn't have used the term "Lazermark", because I never noticed if the gun was marked that way. The Weatherby Nation forum is where that term came up, and that configuration is apparently well known down there as a Cabela's exclusive, so that's what I called it.

Considering how my purchase went, I'm not surprised by the dog-and-pony show you experienced. When I asked to handle the gun, I expected the salesman (who was very friendly and helpful, but not very gun-savvy) to ask for my PAL. Nope...here's the gun. He handed me the trigger-locked rifle, I went over it carefully, almost hoping to find an excuse not to buy it...after all, I had walked in to buy a couple of T-shirts and kill some time waiting for my wife. I asked to try the trigger, since my only complaint with my Gen1 Vanguard was the trigger and I had heard these were an improvement. I was told no, sorry, against company policy, can't take the trigger lock off. I was a bit irritated, but okay. I then asked if we could pass a patch down the barrel, which was very dirty and looked like it had some sort of irregularity in the rifling halfway down. This necessitated another salesman entering the fray, and the three of us carted the still-trigger-locked gun into the back, where it was ascertained that no cleaning equipment was to be had. By this time, I was hooked...I knew I wanted this gun, and would buy it if I couldn't find any flaws in it. I eventually told them I would buy a BoreSnake, to be used right then and there to clean the barrel. We did this, the bore proved to be dusty but perfect, and I said "sold". I also, in the privacy of the back room, squeezed the trigger once and was astonished at how crisp and light it was. The two sales guys were more than a bit diffident about letting me trip the trigger...and I in turn did not point out that I was the only one who had visibly checked the gun and proven it safe.

In fairness, these guys were not being a-holes, and did everything they could to be helpful. They were just working within the boundaries set for them by Cabela's...but, man, it gets tiresome to have to work so hard to get someone to take your money!

By the way, the rifle looks like it will be a shooter. I had probably a couple hundred rounds of .270 tucked away, some factory loads, and bunch of reloads, and everything seems to shoot less than 1.5MOA, with at least one factory load printing three groups of .8MOA. Three-shot groups...good enough for me.

I order guns from the old SIR site (Cabela's) all the time... what the heck is going on??? They are in the business of shipping goods... I don't get the problem... very strange!

They won't ship between stores? That's a litte odd. I've had wholesale sports in Langley bring in a gun from other stores, if that store felt like parting with it. Heck I've had cars brought in from other provinces because the local dealership didn't have what I wanted. Seems odd they want to make you work to spend hard earned money.

The .257 is now purchased and beginning to make its way to Saskatchewan, which of course is the natural habitat of .257 Weatherbys and STWs. Thanks Kman. Apparently its a real eye-popper.

I wanted it..awe..they have more on order?

In an ironic twist of fate, I got another phonecall from Cabella's who now claim there is one in Saskatoon. Obviously, I'd tried there first, since I live in Sasktoon about 3 minutes away from Cabella's but they didn't know what I was talking about. If you want it, grab it quick.

The mass confusion of that operation defies belief.
