Got A 10/22t!

If your new to the game spotting them will be sort of tough and going with guys that can can be more than a little frustrating, but that will come. Probably the first mistake is expecting to see a whole gopher lots of times you will but spring you are dealing with more cautious adults. So your mostly looking for heads some times eyes though the grass.

Also i you can identify mounds, scan in the grass around those.

The babys will be out in a few weeks then life will be easier.

I just bought the Silver Eradicator. In anticipation of the next few weeks.

gotta love ebay. got it for $250 canadian.

Now I need a silver QD scope mount for the ruger, anyone know where I might find something like that?

thx in advance,

I was told to sight in at 25 yards as for the trajectory of a 22 it should be dead on at 75 yards, what weight of bullet does this apply to?

I would have to run the numbers the dead on at 25 back on at 75 might work. I have become more of a fan of sighting in at the actual distance if possible. I have gotten into the habit of carrying a home made portable target stand so it is easy to set-up and check zero. it also allows for odd ball ranges you can experiment and see if you can actually hit a gopher @ 125 consistently in field type conditions.

I think I like the idea of sighting for an actual longer distance rather than rely on a 25 yard doping and expecting it to be "on" for a more practical distance.

The scope I am getting has a min power at 8x so by its nature I will be setting it up for sniping top level gopher operatives. I expect most of my gopher shots to be 40 to 100+ yards.

I got a little bored so I dug around a litl bit on the sight in at 25 yards dead on at 75. In this year interactive Ferderal catalog they added graphing So I cut & pasted a couple of what if's.

I used ammo that I have the hyper velocity load 31 gr, AE 38 gr hp and gold metal match 40 gr solid. The rule of thumb you were told seemed a bit optimistic and as it turned out it was. the rule should be on at 25 on at 50 for 1200~ fps loads.

I never bothered with a 100 yard zero at that range the hmr takes over.

Thanks for those charts they are totally different than the one I was looking at online (which did account for sight height)

I went out again today after sighting in last night, I sighted in at 75 "paces" - I took very large steps. I was shooting prone on a makeshift tripod. I probably grouped them 2 inches or less (I need work on my shooting tecnique - most noticebly the breathing really moves my POI ). once I felt I was pretty much zoned in , I paced out 25 and the rifle was indeed dead on.

I was using a hypervelocity shell. most of the shots were past 75 which I had to hold over.

Soon the field I frequent will have it's 1000 gopher holes cultivated - I expect the day after to be a good day to go hunting while they dig new holes they will be much easier to spot , I did notice my skill in spotting them increased tremendously now my 4th time out.

I did manage to hit a few, There are some REALLY FAT gophers out there. I can't wait to get my new scope. Also staying Low really helps, I can shoot just as stable sitting on the ground as prone, today I forgot my tripod otherwise there would have been a lot less gophers around.

Be realistic fellows!

Those things are Klik Klaks. Yes they may be decently accurate but that is all they are, decent. I have one and still think it was the biggest waste of money even with all the work put into it. I have been thinking of trying another barrel but I would probably sell it before that ever happens and go back to a bolt action.

One thing I was surprised by but did not post was the match load out performed the other 2 in the winddrift department. With the hyper being the worst in a wind.

It seemed the gophers were standing up all over the place around 150+ yards. Its ok shooting with a hold over but its more fun when they fit nicely in the cross hairs.

I have a PE-90 with 100 varmint rounds ready to break out, I am just waiting to become more familiar with the land owner before I break out the black special.
