Got a .44 mag, do I really need a 30-30? Im addicted to levers!

The poster is actually right, with a good 45/70 and handloads he could do without all the others mentioned, but who wants just 1 gun?

One question? Why do you need a bear defence gun against Eastern Black Bears? Afterall they are not agressive like the bigger western bears? If you use common sense and camp the correct way, you'll be fine.

Have you ever been camping, sleeping in a tent and had a black bear wake you up. Yes the bear was right outside the tent and no amount of noise made him go away. No food around at all, and he just sat outside the tent sniffing around. Took about 20 minutes before he left, but it made me real nervous. Second situation was with my dog who seems to have a death wish. Took of from my cottage when there was a bear on the next property, and was face to face with the bear barking and growling going ape sh t. The bear eventually took off but I just want something for a just in case situation. I don't like feeling helpless plain and simple. I have spent my whole life in either thunder bay or perry sound area and have a lot of experience with black bears. I realize they aren't normally agressive but there is always a chance and the more bears you see the higher that chance gets. Now really the whole bear defense thing is just a real good reason to bring a gun along. Camping on crown land means lots of plinking.

I go out into the bush in BC there are an estimated 200,000 + black bears here and 23,000 grizzlies...

I've never carried bear spray and I always carry a firearm...

To do differently would be to do a Timothy Treadwell and he is now dead...

Just like Concealed/Open Carry I would be doing it everyday. Not because there is a good chance I will be assaulted, but because there is a chance period. I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it. But most people on here already understand this concept. Any naysayers can have fun with your pepper spray. The bears like seasoning on their meet. Lol. Now back on topic. I have now officially changed my position. The new debate is .270 vs. 45/70. Thanks camp cook! I just don't see the 30-30 offering much more benefit over the .44 mag.

Out to 150 yards the 44 mag/30-30 in a rifle are basically ballistic equals beyond that the 30-30's higher BC bullets help it easily outdistance the 44mag.

I have absolutely no interest in a 270 if I was leaning that way I'd go 280 or 30-06 just no need for a 270 unless it is either a WSM or Weatherby.

.44 Mag do you "need" a .30-30?

Yes. :p

NAA.

My need for the .270 comes from the calibre restrictions where I live.
Last year I had the oportunity to go and shoot some coyotes but only had a .308 and max is .275 cal. So essentially a .270 is the gun that can do it all for me. I just wish I had the cash to have all of the above. But for now it is strictly about utility. I guess I am really answering my own question.
I have a lever already for camping and such so it looks like the .270 would be the best choice for an all around hunting rifle. And a stevens 200 is cheap, but a hell of a gun for under 400 bucks. Guess I've made up my mind.
Thanks Everyone.

I know what you want, you want the new Marlin 336 BL "double turdy" with 18 inch barrel and laminated stock. Similarly, you also want Marlin 1895 GBL in 45-70 with full tubular magazine and 18 inch barrel. SBL (Stainless) in 45-70 is even sweeter but a bit pricey.

Although I already own a Marlin 1895GS in 45-70 plus 3 .30 calibre rifles, I've always been a little embarassed to admit that I don't own a 30-30 Win 94 or a Marlin 336.

There's something very practical about a 30-30. Plenty of punch close up, low recoil, easy to carry and ammo available everywhere in the north.

For the most part, the 45/70 and .270 fill different roles. The .270 shoots smaller bullets faster, and flattens trajectory. Again it comes down to how far you want to shoot.

Since you have caliber restrictions, I don't see why you wouldn't opt for the .270. It will kill the hell out of everything in north america.....;)

I hunt deer with a 30/30 M94 Winchester.
My dad for years used a Ruger .44 mag auto loader.
Other than the larger hole and more meat damage on his deer we never found any meaningful differences at woods ranges.
For that reason I would get a .270 instead of either a 30/30, or a .45/70 if I already had a .44 mag.
That"s just my opinion, YMMV.
