Got a black combat shotgun (590A1)

The big gain on the 18.5 plus an extension is the reduced length, and weight.
Except after the cost of the gun, plus the extension and add on all the taxes and shipping, you are actually exceeding the price of the 20" version because its ends up being around $680ish dollars after all said and done. ($500/gun, $100/extension, $80/taxes&ship)

Not a big deal, just know that you pay the same or more for the 18.5 as the 20 if you get the extention. You end up with less length, weight, round capacity and no bayo lug as a result.

I'll keep it stock for a while then consider it in the future. I think the extension makes the 18.5 look better and adds extra capacity. I already have a 20" Mossberg anyway.

Can anyone tell me what this is that shipped, sealed in a small envelope, with my 590A1? Looks like (same size as) the head of an SKS cleaning rod...

If you have a 20" A1 it goes on the angled flat on your bayonet lug.
If you're buying an A1, I would encourage everyone to ensure it's actually in the box. Mine was missing and parkerized machine threaded swivel studs are not common.
My retailer told me it was a "warranty issue" and after contacting warranty provider was sent a "blued" replacement with the explanation that that was all Mossberg would supply him. To which I would have to call B.S.

You might also want to ensure that barrel lugs have been installed parallel to each other as my replacement barrel was a nine month turn around. And that was only after I contacted Mossberg myself. They had not received a request for replacement barrel 7 months after warranty provider had received my hooped barrel.

Don't get me wrong, I think the 590A1 is unquestionably THE best value in a combat shotgun.

The warranty experience was frustrating, to put it mildly.

I've also noticed that my 590A1 has a recoil pad that is softer than the one's on my 500's (which are hard). Is a softer, more pliable recoil pad better or is too soft? I guess I'll find out when I shoot it, just received it yesterday in the mail and haven't had a chance.

I think my next gun is going to be one of these 590A1's been looking at them for a while and it's time for another SG. Time to visit the local gun stores and see what they have.

Ya my recoil pad is super smooshy too, it's kinda got a cross-hatch like rubber pattern with voids in the rubber going down both sides (only way i can describe it). I shoot nothing but slugs and 3" buck outta my a1 so i love the soft recoil pad. I myself have never had a problem with it "sticking" to clothes or anything while shouldering. I could maybe see it happening if you're wearing super loose gangster t-shirts or something but those will catch on anything. However I've since switched to a magpul stock and though not as squishy in the recoil pad department, way superior stock overall. Far better ergonomics and looks badass as hell

I don't like the looks of the Magpul stock. Definitely a 'no go' just due to it's appearance for me.

Heavy and robust shotgun, built like a tank. Really impressed with the weight and design. 18.5" gives you a great balance and 'pointability' in my opinion.

Fair enough. I feel the same way with any benelli shotgun except the m4, just look like lame euro abortions to me. I will say this, don't shut the door completely on the magpul until you've held one or better yet fired a few rounds with one if possible. As soon as mine was on everything just felt better, finger position, wrist position, easier, faster and smoother to shoulder, lighter bla, bla, bla, the list goes on

I have another shotgun in full Magpul furniture.
I do like the SGA stock much more than the accompanied MOE forend though. I like look of the MOE, but the not the feel.
Matter of fact I'll be installing a Magpul MVG vertical grip to it tomorrow in order to improve the feel and control when cycling the action.

The supercell recoil pad on the SGA is quite squishy. These stocks recoil pads are avail in two versions, squishy and hard. The recoil pad is hard on mine FWIW.

So far I like the 590s factory furniture, so it's not going anywhere anytime soon.

If someone locally had one to try, I'd definitely do so and I'm open to new things. It's supposed to be better ergonomically for some shooters, I just don't like the appearance.

I'm planning on putting wood furniture on my 590A1, if all goes well.

Nice offer man ^^^. I think the MVG will really improve the feel for me. The MOE forend requires the shooter to do almost an AR style hand wrap/hold on it. Mostly in order to accommodate the built in rear hand stop. Otherwise the handstop digs into the side of your hand, under your pinky. Not my type of shotgun hold.

I have this one coming, can't wait to see how well those ghost rings will work for me...

Got some used wood furniture on the EE = Stripped, sanded lightly, then stained red oak. 3 coats of Tung Oil and it's done. Came out pretty good for a wood newbie (I think, anyway). Need to find some recoil pads for the old wood stocks, the new ones even if they are the right size, the holes don't line up. Either have to buy correct pads or drill new holes.

To me...the Mossberg M590A1 is the Ultimate Combat Shotgun, right next to the Benelli M4. My 14" M590A1 kicked the sh!t outta all the Remington 870's I've ever owned, reliability, quality, craftsmanship, and accuracy (Ghost ring sight/slugs).

The only Remington I love is the 870 Police Magnum in polished blue steel, walnut stock, shiny stainless bolt, 18" barrel, no mag extension, 5+1. a true classic, and beautiful as a piece of jewelry.

But the Mossberg M590A1 is a freaking All American Battle Tank....built for Combat ;) ...a 12Ga Magnum BEAST well equipped with accurate Ghost Ring sights, that turn the shotgun into an accurate rifle when firing 1.oz Slugs
