I just shot a coyote at 200 yards with my 300 win mag. The load was a 168 hpbt Hornady match bullet over 79.4gr of RL 22. This load puts the bullet out of my 28 1/2" barrel at 3400 fps. The yote was running straight away and the bullet got him right in the a-hole. It went in and did not come out. There was not a speck of blood anywhere. Who says you can't use a 300 win mag when you are hunting for fur?

Interesting...........at only 200 yards. If a 168 hpbt Hornady match bullet will blow up/get stopped within the length of a measly coyote I sure wouldn't want to use it on anything bigger. I would have expected more of a 'blown to smithereens' kind of performance.:)

I shot my wolf with a .300 WM and 180gr Ballistic Tips. Right behind the shoulder at 75 yards. There was one small hole going in, and one coming out.

A buddy of mine shot a yote at 20 yards with a 45-70. Hit the bugger square in the head! The bullet travelled through the animal lengthwise. What a mess!

Using match bullets would probably work on pelts. If you don't mind the larger entry hole. The 45-70 is not reccomended...lol

Last time I shot a Coyote with my 300WM, was about 75 yards away with 180 grn Power Point (Winchester cheapies).

Entrance wound was small (.30 cal!), exit wound was a BIG MESS. The lungs and other vitals were blown right out the other side. Exit hole was about 6-9 inches round. Musta got him right on the shoulder bone, or else I wouldn't think the round would expand enough to cause that kind of damage.

Wasn't worth salvaging the pelt on THAT one!

yeah I shot a coyote with 150grain soft point of a 270, at around 175yards front to back, no visible exit... I thought that was weird. Its probably sitting under the skin at the oposite end... somewhere.

I made the worst rookie mistake on a big dog saturday.

had my 243 on my back doing a tour of the lake up at the cottage.
Low and behold, I come across a big Yote on the ice between two Islands (allmost on to one) Instead of stopping, and shooting him @ 300 yards, I tried to get a bit closer. STUPID. No matter how good of snow camo you have, it doesnt work on a lake :)
Fuxxer Took off like a bullet and i didnt get a shot, and wasnt poking him that far on a run on the lake. I worked him for a bit from the other end of the island, but couldnt get him to come in.

DarrylDB.... you learnt the same lesson I once learned. If you don't pull the trigger the animal doesn't die...:D :You should try a shot next time...you never know you might surprise yourself. I can say from being in the same situation that the middle of the lake is a very big place and lonely place for a wolf to be when there's lead flying at him! that being said I digress.... I also once learned very painfully that stalking animals to get a closer shot is often the best way to go instead of trying to make a 350yd shot in the rain with a driving cross wind. lol.:D

I once tried to get 10 yards closer to a whitetail buck once that was 160 yards away

I had a 7saum in my hands

Well you shot it right in the a-hole, so the bullet travelled all the way through. No exit hole cause it yelped when it went up his butt and came out the open mouth. Happens all the time!

And the funny part is, the gun shoots into an inch and a half at 300 yards, and hits 6 inches low at that distance. .
And... I still wanted to get closer.

Yes, that was stupid

And Greg, just an FYI, Its not too smart to "just take the shot" on a frozen lake. I wasnt shooting at #### unless i was sure of what my backstop was.(Which was an island if could make the other 50 yards) A 95 gr Ballistic tip could very well carry for a few miles skipping across a lake after a passthrough, and even worse if you miss.
