Got a Mauser project rifle, what should I do with it?

Hola good sirs.

I have gotten my hands on a fantastic project rifle for the purpose of learning how to rust blue and fill minor pitting with my TIG. It's a sporter Mauser with no markings whatsoever in (I assume, haven't cast the chamber yet) 8mm Mauser. I saw those 45 ACP conversions and it got the wheels turning. I own a lathe and have already made my own barrels from scratch so the sky is the limit. So what would you do with a blank slate rifle that cost you very little and too much time and motivation on your hands?

(I have a Schultz and Larsen in 6.5x55 so my long range target and hunting needs are taken care of. This is solely a fun gun or dream idea post.)

Depends on what you want ie a hunting rifle or a target shooter. You've got 6.5 covered otherwise I'd suggest a 6.5-06. If you slug the barrel and it is .323 then 8mm-06 is an option. Have fun with it.

358 win or some other big hard hitting caliber!

If you already got a 6.5x55, compliment with a short and hard hitting nimble to carry setup.

Edit, if your filling pits in an action, you wanna try your hand at filling some threaded holes in a 336 action?

I haven't really put any thought into a big thumper cartridge. I'll look into those and see if anything strikes my fancy.

Once I've got some practice under my belt, I'd take that on. I'll contact you once I have everything figured out.

For the average old barrelled action in need of some TLC, my first instinct would be to turn it into a usable light-weight guide rifle or 'truck gun.'

OOps, its actually an 1893, anyways, you could practice on that first before your mauser. Im not attached to fantastic outcomes, it is worn, scratched and has someone SIN number lightly scratched into it.

I don't know anything about the process of making a barrel from scratch but .300 blackout is an extremely fun plinking catridge and if you cast your own bullets you can realy load them down. Shoot 230g bullets ~800fps for like 10 cents a pop.

Would be a neat new world cartridge for an old world gun.

Sounds like you need either a big wumper or a little zipper to round out the group. Maybe something in .223, .222 Rem, 22-250, or .204 Ruger? Or be really weird and go with .22 Savage High Power
