Got a nice buck on sunday

Around noon near the Whiteshell, I was just getting ready to pack it in when I heard a buck shuffling around on the trail up ahead.

I had been still hunting all morning since first light. I had a heck of a time getting out there from Winnipeg with all the snow that came down. Plows half-plowing the highway didn't make things any better, but I left extra early to get out in time.

I walked a 2 mile trail with binoculars and didn't see anything other than some tracks that were already pretty hard, so I started exploring an area about 10 miles up the road I'd never explored much before. I was about 50 feet from my truck when this guy popped out of the bush.

He was quarter to a bit, so I shot him in the brisket and broke the exit side humerous on the way out. He somehow managed to run about 150 yards before crashing to a halt in a thicket.

The load was 110gr FFFg under a 370 gr conical.

I'm a little sad I can't go hunting anymore this year. We're down to one tag and there are oodles of deer in that are of the province. I took a doe from the first trail on opening day with same configuration.

Good going: What bullet were you using? I too am done for this season, with a big dry doe that wouldn't go away LOL. I was not very impressed with the Traditions 250g Smackdown bullets that I have been using. After shooting 3 whitetails in 2 years with these bullets I could see no expansion at all, the hole out is the same size as the hole in. I am using a Traditions Buckhunter with 100g of 3f black powder.

I am using the TC maxi-ball and I don't think I'll go back to sabotted. I recovered one from a fawn that was quartering to quite a bit where the bullet rode the skin. It mushroomed nicely. I don't think that the jacketted bullets end up hitting fast enough to start expanding and I have had two bad experiences where a tipped bullet yawed/tumbled and popped the liver/stomach - but I definitely get better accuracy with a sabotted bullet. I love still hunting in thick brush, so the conicals work better for me. 110gr is a little hot I think (there was some leading of the bore and my primers were getting stuck) and next year I think I'm going to back it off.

My buddy's son shot one out there yesterday, while deer hunting. The she wolf had done a complete circle around his location and when he finally shot her, she was at 40 yds.heading onto the ridge he was sitting on. He said it was kind of creepy being stalked like that! I wonder how many times that's happened before and you just haven't seen them. Too many wolves in the Whiteshell, and not very many hunter's this year.
 
By your description of the bullet's path through the deer, I was wondering if you work in the medical field, lol.
Nice pics, well shown. [I'm sure not all will agree] Graphic. but informative.
I shot a big doe several years ago with a 54 Hawken percussion arm, using a good charge behind a round ball.
The shot was nearly broadside, and that ball exited, leaving a 2½" hole.
Shot was 90 yards, and she dropped in her tracks. Quite effective, IMHO.
