I live in Cape Breton, Nova scotia. Lots of country around and woods that can go pretty deep. I also have my hunting license and have a legitimate spot to go hunting in the woods, its near my bungalow. There is a lot of woods where my property is at since we are the last house on the road, there is a house just up the road a few seconds but its all woods in the back of the bungalow.

My question is can I shoot my .22lr semi auto rifle on my property in the woods? What are the restrictions and laws of "target practicing" or "pest control" on my own land.

Also can I go in the woods far enough (say 2 mile radius of any civilization) away from any roads or housing to shoot in the woods, even if its not hunting season and im not shooting animals?

Others will have to confirm as I'm pretty new to all this myself, but AFAIK it comes down to your town laws. For example, where I live no firearm can be discharged 100m from any road or public space. We actually have a map of zones where you can use a firearm.

From the NS hunting regs .
7. No person shall at anytime discharge any weapon:
• within or across the travelled portion of any highway, or within
30m of the boundary of any highway; or
• between one-half hour after sunset and one-half hour before
sunrise the following day(refer to page 114).
8. No person shall at anytime:
• hunt, take or kill, or attempt to hunt, take or kill wildlife with a
weapon or discharge a weapon within 804m of a school;

slug within 402m of a dwelling, playground, golf course,
athletic field, woods operation, place of business, or public
building other than a school;

within 182m of a dwelling, playground, golf course,athletic
field, woods operation, place of business, or public building

• hunt, take or kill, or attempt to hunt, take or kill wild life that is
within 182m of a dwelling, playground, golf course,athletic
field, woods operation, place of business, or public building
other than a school.
9. The owner or occupier of a dwelling or person authorized by the
owner or occupier who holds a valid licence may discharge a
weapon, or hunt, take or kill wildlife within the distances stated if the
point of discharge is not within the above prescribed distances of:
• any other dwelling; or
• a school, public building, playground, golf course,athletic
field, woods operation, or place of business.

10. It is an offence to have a firearm loaded in any place where the
firearm cannot be legally discharged (criminal code).
11. A person who holds a valid licence to hunt or trap and who has
wounded wildlife may discharge a weapon, for the purpose of
taking wounded wildlife within the above prescribed distances,
provided it is done in a safe manner and the consent of the owner
or occupier of the land has been obtained.
Any local regulation, town bylaws etc would also have to be read and followed as well .

When I first moved here when goose season started I woke up every morning to gunshots close to the house. Since then they have planted corn and soybeans and have had no hunters as the seasons almost done before they get the crops harvested.The distance from a house thing dosn't seem to matter around here for some reason.

If you note, the distance is only 182m for shotgun. At that distance shotgun still wouldn't be quiet.
