I've been doing a bit of reading here and there about these, and I think I'm gonna get off my ass and get one.

My question is: is there any great advantage to getting the 28" barrel over the 24" version? (I'm not big into shotguns.......yet ;))

The shotgun would be used for general farting around. Not really looking to do any hard core skeet or trap. Maybe the slo-mo stuff with friends and a hand thrower :p .
I see Ellwood's has the wood stocked 24" models, and I usually get a hint of the 28's about 2 days after the sale ends (or they're out of stock :().

Anyone?

For the overall length the 24" MP-153 would be very similar to the sighting plane of a over under with a 30 inch barrel given the length of the receiver. I had a Benelli SBE with a 24" barrel that was a great all round gun that I used in sporting clays and also shot some skeet and trap with.

For your general farting around perspective I would choose the 24" barrel.

24' of barrel would be more than enough for the purposes you have in mind.

By the way, that 24' will be like 25' with the choke tube.

If your looking for a hunting gun, I generally prefer a little shorter barrel. Most of my shotgun purchases have been with 26 inch pipes. I find a little shorter of a barrel is just nicer to handle when there's sticks and brush around. Alot of guys still think a longer barrel is going to throw a tighter pattern or give more velocity, and neither is going to happen. Your pattern is determined by your shell and choke, and most of the powder is burned up after about 20 inches. I think if your going to shoot competitive, a longer barrel might help you with a smooth swing, but if your anything like me, you won't get much chance for it in the field. If a teal comes in, he's coming in full throttle and you won't see him until the last second. At that point I'm more concerned getting the gun to my shoulder, not hanging up on the branches around me and pushing like Hell to get the bead in front of his beak. I never said I was graceful. :D

The 24" barrel would be fine. No performance advantage for the longer barrel and a little handier. As REM3200 pointed out, the sight radius should be similar as a double with a 30" barrel.
