A couple of decades ago, I suggested to a friend that he should rebarrel a nice M700 BDL he had [It was a worn 7mm Rem Mag]
Since he liked my own 308 Norma Mag, he decided he would have the new barrel chambered to this.
We found a nice PacNor barrel blank 30 cal, 1-10 twist, and he sent the rifle and barrel off to Dennis Sorensen. Due to busy schedules,
I did not hear much about this rifle, except J... said it seemed to be a great shooter. However, He also commented about the
recoil, and said it was not a pleasant rifle to shoot at the bench.
Recently, due to J's..... serious health issues, I came into possession of this rifle. It sat in my safe for several months, and finally I
found time to see what it worked like. I threw together some loads, working up to a known good 308 NM load. [180/74 grains of Norma MRP
Norma brass and CCI 250 for the spark] It would misfire about 20% of the time....seemed to be a light strike issue.
New firing Pin and spring from Gary at Bighorn Sales in Houston fixed that problem.
Using the 180 Speer Hot-Cor FB bullet, I shot two consecutive 3-shot groups under .7" at 100M. [smaller group was .55"]
On a lark, I decided to experiment. On a single target, I fired 3 shots, one using the Speer 180 FBHC, one using the Nosler 180 Partition,
and one using the Swift 180 A-Frame. These three different bullets clustered into a beautiful .68" group. Thinking maybe it was a one-off, I
tried a second group. It measures .72" Rare to see a rifle do this with different projectiles. FWIW, the Partition graphs 3140 avg.
Recoil is stout, but definitely manageable. Think I may take it elk hunting this fall. Dave.
