Got an offer for an AR: what does CGNers think?

Hey everyone, hope you're all doing well.

A friend of a friend is selling an AR. I've always wanted one, but they haven't been in my price range. However as i just said, one has been offered to me and I was wondering what you guys thought about it.

It's an

"Colt sporter lower receiver-DPMS upper receiver with 14.5 DPSM barrel-1 in 7 twist with KAC removable carry handle, colt 3 position stock."

i has roughly 2000 rounds though it and he's asking just under $1000.

How expensive would it to be to get some picatinny rails set up for hand-grip,light etc?
Can I get some opinions and thoughts on this firearm please:)
 
I was told it was a good price, if this was YOUR rifle, how much would you sell it to me for? Does $1000 seem like too little for what it is? Or is it a fair price?


How much cash would it cost to add rails so i could add a grip, light and optics??

How much barrel life does something like this have before it needs to be changed???

I'm just getting into rifles so please excuse me.
 
I won't be able to help you much, bud! I've owned my 1st AR for over 20yrs, but I don't really know much about the various models etc..

I do know that I recently paid $1300 for a Stag-lowered 11.5" AR and many told me it was a great deal. You're looking at a non-chinese AR for a paltry $1k. Seems to me that you can't really go wrong. :cheers:

I never really thought about that too much. I've always wanted an AR, just not an Norinco. No offense to anyone here that owns one, just not what i'm looking for.
 
Norinco doesn't churn out the crude crap it once used to, they've come a long way since. And it's hard to beat their pricing.

However, I don't blame you for wanting a north american version.

well I popped for a norc AR I have no regrets works just fine. no issues at all goes bang every time. also bought a chiappa upper in .22 for it fits and works perfect. peter has tried it out maybe he can give you his opinion. comparison to the others I tried, yes the trigger was a little gritty in the beginning but now after putting endless .22 rounds through it trigger is nicely broken in. maybe someone in your are has and you could try different ones out to compare.
 
What are you doing on-line, Johnny? I thought the site was blocked at work?

To be honest, I think that the trigger on your Norc was better than my Stag.

PS: Funny coincidence: My buddy Paul Barrette just called me 10 minutes ago in regards to trigger work on both the Colt SP1 and the Stag. The Colt was finished up last week. He removed the terrible creep and brought the trigger down to 3lbs, all by using the stock parts. A bit lower than I wanted, but I'm sure I'll end up admitting that it's perfect.

The Stag was another issue, however. He said that the metal in the trigger group is so soft that the trigger was ruined as soon as he'd dropped the hammer a few times on his freshly-polished work. He's now ordering a Jard 3lb adjustable trigger for it, and that'll be the end of it.
He's also machining me up a custom compensator, as I find the one that came with the Stag embarrassingly long.
 
There's been a pile of Colt Sporters on the EE for around $1000, they haven't been selling well... A similar gun to the one your describing is there now:

I own a Colt Sporter - A high quality AR lower, but in low demand for two reasons

1) All the Sporters I've seen have been BIG HOLE. Only Colt made these goofy sized pivot pins, they are non-milspec and *almost* no-one makes aftermarket big-hole uppers for them. People seem to avoid big-hole lowers like the plague... although a standard small-hole upper can be mated to a big hole lower with an inexpensive off-set pin. I'd guess the AR you are looking at has one of these off-set pins, as I only know Daniel Defense to be making big-hole uppers.

2) The Sporters tend to have a weird greenish-black finish, where pretty much all of the other ARs are charcoal black. It makes for a strange, ugly 2-tone effect between an after-market upper and the Colt lower. And many Sporters (including the one you are looking at buying) have aftermarket uppers, because most original sporters are A2 non-detachable handle models, people want flat-tops.

New Colt law enforcement model ARs seem to command huge money, retail and resale... they also have industry standard pin-holes and finish. Big Hole Sporters tend to be hard to sell, so you might have some trouble with a future resale. That being said, if you can overlook the resale, finish and large-hole issues, for under $1000 you are likely getting a high quality, American made weapon.

If you want an AR buy it, yesterday... Even if it's a large pin lower an adaptor pin can take care of that.

Decent quad rails start at $150 ish for YHM rail all the way to "where did my house payment go?" for the very top end brands :D
 
Thanks for the input thus far everyone. So other than the pin issues, getting some rails won't be an issue correct?

What about barrel life?
 
Certainly not the deal of the century, but not bad...
Quad rails run about $150- $200 for an ok setup
You can pick up a fenix tk11 light and a mount for about $100-$120
Then you might want to consider a fore grip for about $50-$75
And lastly a rear flip up iron sight if your going to mount an optic for about $120

Then you just need to decide if you want a red dot, holographic weapon sight, or a scope...
But that's another thread all together

And 2k rounds is not a big deal, you should have lots of life left in the barrel.

The DPMS barrel is a 4140 - not sure your barrel is chromelined. In general, DPMS does not chromeline their barrels. However, some of them do have chromelining.

Barrel life depends on how it was shot.

Looks like a keeper, I'd take it immediately! Colt's up there with the best, so if you manage to get a Colt for anything under 2 grand, you've struck gold. Although this particular carbine has some mileage, you'll very rarely get a chance to acquire a Colt at the price your friend's friend is asking. Go for it!
