I had to look up - Internet says "The average American worker earned approximately $12.98 per week for 59 hours of work in 1900—$674.96 a year." So that rifle's price was originally was about 4 months full time pay, in 1900. So, was not cheap, then, but seems to have gone up (in terms of months of full time pay, for most of us) quite a bit, since then?

To put the price comparison into proper context we would have to see what the price of a current made Winchester 1873 with that level of finish would be. I think 4 months of full pay of an average worker might cover it? That gun is an antique and no longer in current production so the value factors in rarity.
