A while back I had the basic gray stock Remington 597 with a taco target /varmint 2.5-10x40 scope that enjoyed shooting but ended up selling it to get a 10/22. Got one of those put the maurader kin on it but never used it more than a few times so sold it couple months ago with the thought of going back to 597. Always liked the green stock Remington 597 HB 16" heavy barrel and finally grabbed one new for a decent price. :) My gun budget has been stretched lately so I picked up a tasco pronghorn 3-9x40 at Canadian tire (had a $50 gift card) with they sell for 99$ but price matched it to 75$ so only paid $30 after the gift card lol but It looks a little small and plain... What are your thoughts on the scope and pairing the two?
 
3-9 is the old standby and works well. You may find that you HB is accurate enough to want more magnification later. CCI SV and AR Tactical work exceptionally well in mine.
 
I agree about the 3x9 for the 597. I have the heavy barrel model with the Boyd style thumb hole stock. I use a Redfield and it works well for the distances I shoot at, up to 50yds. Mine takes any ammo. I use AE mostly as they are most common in my area.
 
For hunting and plinking you're all set (almost). Factory parallax setting is 100 yards but I'm sure you'll be shooting at 50 yards and in. You can change this to have the proper parallax at 40-50 yards, follow this link http://www.mcarbo.com/store/pg/33-adjusting-parallax-on-non-ao-scope.aspx.

For serious target work or silhouette shooting I think 18x is a minimum magnification for a scope (yes for a .22 :p) but the 597 isn't really that kinda platform. I have a Leupold VX-1 3-9x on my 597.
