So a passing MNR officer sees me walking to my car as he's driving by and pulls in to check my licence, tags, bow encased etc. Fortunately all was good. But according to him there is only 1 officer per county, so it got me wondering, how often have you guys run into them while hunting? This was my first time in 4 years or so.
 
I'm also in SW Ontario and in the 6 or so years I've been hunting deer (bow/rifle) and turkey in the spring I have never came across one. I wonder if they are too busy responding to complaints to be out doing random drop ins or whether its because I am primarily on private land as opposed to public. I don't think anyone else in my gang has either - in the same period of time.
 
I've always wondered how much enforcement they actually get done. I was really surprised to see him where I was. I was hunting down a gravel backroad that doesn't lead to anywhere except farms and there's a series of small woodlots around, not big tracts and not a very heavily hunted area either from what I can tell.
 
I start hunting Sept.1 and finish Dec 25th some times. Im usually out 2-3 times a week. I meet them every year sometimes 2x a year and never had any problems. I wish Id see them 10x a year, we need more enforecement out here in Sask. I also do a few weeks of black bear in May and always see them as we hunt in a Provincial Park.
Im also on the water chasing down walleye from May-Oct. I occasionally see them on the water but its rare.

This is my first year hunting, and I was actually wondering about COs today. Are most of them decent folks, or complete asses? I dont plan or intend to do anything outside the law, or unruly, but being a first year hunter, and so much information to take in on firearms/hunting, I constantly worry about making a mistake (forgetting 1 of the many pieces of ID required, being in the wrong area at the wrong time, with the wrong gun, in a municipality with no discharge rules...
 
Up in matachewan the co's are dicks and go out of their way to piss u off. Down in sw ont I got stopped 3x turkey hunting. Each time I was asked how many bullets I got in my sxs. There out for turkey and controlled deer hunts where they can watch trucks and listen for shots. They driving a black barely marked ford 4x4 full size truck
 
I've been hunting 25+ years, many seasons with 40+ days in the bush, in Ontario, Manitoba, Quebec, NWT and Nunavut and have never encountered a CO in the field. The closest I've come is they used to stop by our deer camp once a year to say hi.
 
I've only ever been stopped at random check points by the OPP, they step it up in hunting season around here. I've never seen a CO. I kinda assumed they mostly did complaints or checked large hunt camps?
 
Never seen one in the last 15 years when I have been hunting. I got checked by 2 of them once when canoeing in Algonquin, they just wanted to check I had a camping permit.
 
Well - I live in hunt camp country in Central Ontario. Its quite common to run into CO's, as they target these areas, and there is an MNR office within spitting distance. The reputation of CO's seems to vary from individual to individual - there's always one that is a POW (piece of work). I got approached last year while on watch (visible from the logging road), he checked my papers, asked a few questions about the hunt, and split. All-in-all quite cordial, and he kept his voice down, so as not to disturb the hunt.
 
In 45 years of hunting & fishing, 6 or 7 times while hunting, two spot checks coming out of
Long Point & Wolfe Island and twice while fishing. The Conservation Officers and RCMP were
courteous & professional. No problems whatsoever.
 
Three times my whole life, and twice that was at highway road blocks, and this year was the forst time I've seen one in the feild. He was driving by and saw the "machine gun" I was carrying and thought he should check it out. My Sub2000 turned out to be a non issue after I showed him 3 mags that only had 5 in each. We had a good laugh about it and all was well
 
Our camp has had them drop in a couple times the last few years. He climbed up to the pole to check the deer hanging, checked all licences (hunting and firearms) and even inspected one of the guys rifles who just arrived back on his 4-wheeler to ensure it was being transported accordingly.
 
been checked the odd time when fishing. only ever had to deal with one on a road block coming out of a fsr. they told me i cant be shooting up their. i showed them they were wrong. then they told me 2 of mu guns were not reistered and 1 was registered to a guy in ontairo. i have bought all 3 from stores brandnew within the past year. once again they were proven wrong by a phone call to the RCMP office. meanwhile my guns on their tailgate in the rain. not happy about that. the two officers were greenhorns. im 22 they may have been 28yrs tops. just gunghoe to bust some one i guess
