Went out to the cabin for a little look and what do ya know...8 Merganzers in the pond. Managed to get 5 of them by the time it was all said and done. They had some very large trout in their bellies. Here are a few pics...some of the birds are quite big. The count is 44 ducks so far this season. Lots of shooting left...

Well, they taste sortta like trout. I have been eating them since I was younger untill now. They are really good on the BBQ with a few trout on the side. Mind you, our Merganzers here may be eating different fish then yours. When you've grown up eating nothing but fish, I guess it just seems natural.

All I can say is, if YOU'RE happy, then WE'RE happy! Good shooting anyway. And really, I apologize that I rained on your parade. I can see now that you were happy and proud to bag 5 birds, and who are we to ridicule you? I feel like a knob.

Humblest apologies, again.

Nice pictures by the way.

Hey, no worries.

Have any of you guys ever eaten sea ducks? Like Eider, Scooters, Murre/Turre?? Merganzers taste just like them. Most of my Merganzers are shot in the ocean and it was really something to see them inland, and in my pond. Oh well...more for me I guess...

Am I the only one not seeing the pics:confused: .

Anyway Congrats on the mergs.

My last hunt on PEI was for mergs. Here's the day's bag for our group. I ate my birds and they were pretty good skinned out and breasted and soaked in milk overnight. Cut the meat in strips, tossed with garlic salt and oil and seared them in a hot cast iron pan. They don't taste like mallards or canvasbacks but they don't taste bad either. Now Cormorants are damned good to eat. When we had the season there I would shoot them and eat them. Textured like beef and tastier than goose.

If they taste like Eiders, "I'm no longer jealous of you coasters who get to shoot them big sea ducks.":D :D

Eiders are a good tasting bird, among the best tasting birds there are. Merganzer doesn't taste exactly like them, but along those lines. Just to give you an idea...

It all depends on how you cook them though...I don't cook sea ducks/merganzers the same as I do as pond ducks. They also go great with a couple Cod fillets or some BBQ salmon.
