Got My Alaskan Scout: Doesn't Look Right

I'm not sure if Wanstalls deserves an F for this. A C perhaps, but Chiappa is the company that gets the F.

Wanstalls not opening the box drops them to B, and then not doing better with service a C.

However, them not ensuring the rifle was tip top is not as bad as the people who are actually building it in the first place. I'm looking for a lever gun, and they have completely taken themselves off the list of brands I will consider.

yes you are right no matter what you do the spots on the gun will keep getting bigger, wanstalls offered me 200 dollar discount i was going to keep it but the gun looks worse and worse by the day(no matter how much i oil it ) i will see if wanstalls will get me a replacement or send it back to the factory and have it re plated

I don't want to offend anyone here but I was always under the impression that Chiappa was kind of a bottom of heap, low end manufacturer......no?

What are people doing buying $1400 Chiappas?!? Shouldn't these guns be like $500-ish?

I was fence sitting and glad I did. I thought this would have made a dandy companion to my 629, but the fact it was a Chiappa with a Colt price tag made me hesitate. If I were the OP I would be absolutely pissed right off, that is a used banged up gun with a really bad finish {perhaps why its used and banged up...factory floor model if you will}...problem being that isn't what the OP bought, he bought BNIB and paid accordingly. The fact Wanstalls offered a partial refund is A+ service, if, and only if, the refund equates to 100% of the mark up{cost} (IMHO, this should be the cost of not checking the rifle knowing replacements wouldn't be an option), and if the OP is agreeable to the resolution. Short of that, the gun goes back to the factory for fix or replacement at no cost to the OP no questions asked ( of the OP that is, questions must be asked in their QC department if they want to stay in business much longer).
Anyhow, Chiappa is officially off my radar and Wanstalls will be dealt with scrutiny from now on with this guy!
Thanks goes out to the OP for letting the community know about the problems he's enduring with this purchase.

Why not an F? The only way they could have handled the sale of these guns any worse it to stiff the affected people with a "once we sold it, it's your problem - here is the contact info for whoever the imported is/was" - which would raise the F to EPIC FAIL. (I'm assuming it's North Sylva?)

The fact someone further down the list got the gun the OP should have got is unacceptable and could have been averted by a 10 second inspection of the product before shipping it out in the first place.

So let me get this right ,for those of us that still have these rifles we can expect that the finish will tarnish and then turn to rust spots. Is there some way to neutralize this process?? Other than dechroming and starting over? Please advise us .r:bangHead:

I bought a Chiappa mares leg take down just the other day. Ordered it online but made sure to pick it up in store just so I can look it over. Two people at the store could not get the rifle to come apart (one each grabbing one end). They switched me out with another, the last they had, and prepared to issue a refund as I looked this one over. It worked fine and I am happy with it. I can understand why you got a refund through, the same reason the store I was at was prepared to issue me one. If they can't replace it the best they can do is give you your money back. Even if it's not a limited edition if they don't know when they will be able to give a replacement I would want my money back anyway and not have paid for something and not know when I will get it.

I sent mine back on Wednesday. I can say Gary was very apologetic, accommodating and I had a return postage label sent to me the next day. No issues. I would absolutely buy from Wanstalls again. However Chiappa is out. I was going to buy a Rhino with the same finish but not now.

I have had a Chiappa Mare's Laig takedown in 44 Mag with case hardened receiver for almost 4 years.
Nothing but good service from it.

Wow, I was going to buy 2, actually a friend of mine wanted one and I was getting one, but earlier, there was talk of them loosening up so thought we would wait and see for a while, and now this! I got lucky, to bad, this is another reason we were asking for a stainless model, less things to go wrong! Sorry to hear for those that bought!

Some kind of chemical/electrolytic reaction going on there for sure.
The other guns in the run probably have the same problem.
Chiappa should be taking the financial hit for this fiasco.
The guns were defective from the getgo.

yes mines getting worse and worse hopefully i can get a replacement other than the finish the gun is great

Agreed - if these were all made in the same run., they will probably all develop the same issue. Certainly there is a very good chance of it.

I'd be interested to know what Chiappa's position is on this? Wanstall's, I'm assuming you've been in touch with them. Do you deal direct with Chiappa? If so, what are their plans to correct the situation?

I was going back and forth on one of their 9mm M1 carbines but the QC and customer service questions that seem to arise with Chiappa are giving me pause.

No doubt Wanstalls will need to talk to Chiappa about this fiasco or get stuck taking the financial hit for a shipping crate of returned rifles that might fetch $200 each on the "as is" rack with their pock marked surface metal.
It's just a matter of time before the chemical/electrolytic reaction corrodes the metal on all of the second run of rifles.
It seems that moisture doesn't need to be present for the metal finish to corrode spontaneously.

Speaking from experience, Wanstalls is rock solid first class service hands down. Some ###X steel wool would have probably done the trick. There should be marks from loading a round, guns are usually test fired at factory.

WTF...^ Does that loading gate look like only a test fired round was clawed past it to you!? When was the last time you spent $1,600 ++ on a new rifle {that you no doubt bought due to its corrosion resistant finish} and thought "Well, it would appear it's rusting all over, I'll just rub some steel wool on it...that will probably do the trick."
f:P: Ridiculous!

Any matte finish like this will mark easily if softer meals are rubbed on it.
It isn't the chrome that gets marked, the softer metal is deposited in the finish like fine sandpaper.
It would probably be easily removed, but for no purpose. It will look like that again after use anyway.
