Got my eye on 2 hunting rifles need help making a decision

What am I talking about? Well it is more what others were talking about and I was reading about. here is a link to a thread that has me thinking twice about fluting, http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=416450

I think you already swallowed that worm about the fluting, judging from what you have been saying!

I was set on the model 70 until hearing all the terrible things about barrel fluting. Some guys with the model 70 fluted barrel are noticing that the rifling wears faster inside the barrel where the flutes are compared to the thicker parts. So a fluted barrel is out of the question now. I will look at the browning X bolt VS tikka senario from here on in. The model 70 is dead to me now. Plus I have read some pretty terrible reviews of the new model 70.

You believe what you want, it makes no differrence to me what you buy. But remember every one is trying to help you with advice, you have to filter the information yourself.

I don't really know what you are getting at bigbull? Putting some of my previous posts in bold etc? If you don't think fluting makes a difference no problem. As for me I believe that having thick and thin portions of a barrel will cause uneven heating of the barrel. If believing this means that I am swallowing a worm, I guess I am because it makes sense to me that it would heat up un evenly. Also looking at benchrest shooters, none of them use fluted barrels and they are all about accuracy. That is not the sole reason for dropping the winchester model 70 off my list. I have read quite a few posts on a few sites about how guys are having trouble getting groups smaller than 2" etc. These same guys are then picking up a tikka and going sub MOA so it is not the shooter. Add that to the fact that some of the model 70's I have held in my own two hands have had some serios defects (one got send back by the store) and it all adds up to me not getting one. Not to say Tikka is a for sure though. I still don't like the feel and am not down with all the plastic. I understand it is all stong and the rifles shoot like lasers but I just don't know about all that plastic. For the money I will be spending I want to walk away without having compromised. I see that savage is coming out ith some nice rifles for 2010. I wish the long range hunter came without a fluted barrel. Some of the weather warriors are pretty nice and lets face it for the price savage is more accurate dollar for dollar. I have 3 of them and would gladly put them up against any tikka or winchester in terms of accuracy. I just want to be different with my next purchase. But don't worry bigbull I am aware that everyone is just trying to helpme with their advice. That is want makes this site so fun.

As a open minded red neck I thought it right to handle one of the new win model 70's...
Their website is impressive.

I have never owned a winchester.
Nothing against them.
The pre 64's are legendary.

So I looked the new win model 70 over.
Then side by side with a rem and savage. Seemed ok.
Action smooth enough. Trigger good.
Nothing jumped out at me till...

I cycled the trigger to the fire position. It clicks as loud as my guide gun when I #### the hammer back.
The marlin at least can be done a bit quieter. If hands are not too cold, and one remembers. Not a sure thing when a big animal steps out.

I cannot make a sound with my tikka T3 when moving the safety off.
But the model 70 would not go to safety off without a loud click.

Why?

Are you still having trouble making up your mind after all the assistance?
Get over it . . . if you don't like your first purchase you at least have the equity in order to buy your second choice.

At this point I am just enjoying all the back and forth tikka/winchester warfare. I have a pretty good idea what I am going to buy. Just waiting on the money.

Go for the Model 70. Much better action with some significant history. Easy to upgrade parts later, if you wish. Nobody wil make fun of you in deer camp.

The old Tikkas were OK. The new Tikka is a poorly made rifle. With one of these, the only compliment you might get in deer camp is, "That's a nice calibre."
